I was told by my dealer's service manager to use 90wt in the front axle of my L35 instead of the UDT. He kinda hinted he had seen some gear failure with the UDT.

It stands to reason to me 90wt might be better, since the front axle is all hypoid gears and bearings, with no hydraulic components, and 90wt is specifically formulated for hypoid gears.

Getting ready to do the 400 hr service and was wondering if anyone else has heard this.

We've had some discussion in the past about the fact that some of the Kubota manuals (like my B2710) say to use either UDT/Super UDT or 85W-90 gear oil. It seems very odd when you consider the differences in these two lubricants. I don't think any conclusions were reached in our discussions; just the thought that 85W-90 is more common in gear cases and might lubricate better vs. the fact that the thinner oil might get into tighter places and therefore be better. My tractor, at least, was delivered with UDT in the front axle.

My Kubota dealer made the same recommendation, UDT was fine for the front end but he preferred the 90W gear oil.
