Ford 8N
Whew where to begin. I borrowed my dads tractor to mow my field. Come to find out it is need of some repair. First off he swears it is a 9N, but there is a 8N cast into where the engine mounts to the tranmission. I found out where the engine numbers are but of course they are impossible to read. Hand stamped. I can take some pictures if needed. The fenders have "Ford" stamped into them. The radiator cover has two levers you depress and it pivots out of way. Carburator is a Marvel 241B. Can anyone tell me if its a 8N or 9N by that? Are they other numbers stamped somewhere I can look at?

Ok so here are the issues. The water pump is leaking out the weep hole. Assuming I have to replace it do I have to take off the hood? Is there a schematic anywhere showing the bolting locations?

It dies after about 15 minutes of mowing. Acts like it runs out of gas or choke is on. If you let it sit for a minute it starts and barely idles. If you let it sit longer it starts and idles like nothing is wrong. Any ideas? I have the carb off now to clean it out thinking something was clogging a jet. Could it be something else?

does the rear wheels bolt on in the center with 8 bolts in a small pattern or 6 bolts in a big pattern and does it have small front hubs or big front hubs

Ummmm both? The wheel assembly has eight lugs to axle. The wheel is a two piece assembly, the back that is. The rim with the actual tire on it is connected to a concave disk with six lugs. That disc is connected to axle with eight lug nuts.

Front rims have six lug nuts with farthest nuts at 6" oc

if the rear wheel disc is bolted to the axle with 8 lug nuts it is a 8n

but to make it a little clearer is it a 4 speed or 3 speed if 4 speed its an 8n

Its a 4 speed, now how do I find the year? The has to be some other stampings on it.

Just curious how does the 9n differ? Assume it has a three speed, and something other than 8 lugs

on the side where the oil filter is right below where the head bolts on there is a smoth flat spot with stamped in numbers that is where u date them but the easiest way to get a quick guestment is to see if it front mount are side mount and if it side mount does it have the tach if front mount it is between 1947-49 if side mount 1950-52 if has a tach it is a 52 model

Both the 51 and 52's had the tach. My 51 has one for sure. The intermittant engine operation sounds like crud buildup in the fuel tank which is plugging the flow to the little bulb/shutoff valve below the tank. I would drain the tank, remove the valve, and make sure you got good fuel flow. If not, remove the tank. It can be cleaned by filling partially with deisel or keorosine and adding a bunch of old nails, bolts, washers, etc, and shaking it up good. Empty it out, put it all back together and you should be good to go.

I agree with the tank being gunked up. My '58 Allis Chalmers D14 acted exactly as you described. I pulled the bowl filter off the tank and a large glob of black goo came out. Haven't had a problem since.

I agree with the above that there's a fuel restriction somewhere, could be at the tank but it also could be at any point of the fuel line. I don't know the specifics of this tractor but I would start disconnecting the fuel line at the carburetor to check flow at that point. I assume that this is a gravity fed system like other vintage tractors. If you have good flow out the fuel line, chances are the needle valve to the carb is gunked. If there's still restriction go to the next connection and disconnect, likely the glass water and sediment bowl. If there's good flow from that, there's a restriction in the fuel line. Continue to work your way back to the tank until you find the point of restriction. The guys could be right that it's in the tank, but this way you'll be sure before tearing into it.
