Hi again,

does anybody know how much the R1 tires/wheels run for a 790.

Also, if I fill my R4s, how much weight would I be adding per tire? Can I just use water (in texas)?

Finally, I have heard a lot of good results filling th R4s - any comments on how it should be would be great.

thanks

I'll look on jdparts for ya, it'll show rim prices but dont dare buy tires at a tractor dealer

This is what I got from JDparts

QTY 1 M138917 DISK, WHEEL 190.00 USD

this is the inside part of the rear wheel that is width adjustable

QTY 1 AM124347 RIM, WITH CLAMPS, W10X24 230.00 USD

This is the outside of the rear wheel, I believe the 11.2x24 r-1 is what could come with a 790. about $15 worth of fasteners connect the above together.

Front wheel appears to be:

QTY 1 AM876649 WHEEL 4JA X 12W 84.00 USD

so about $1038 b4 tax (if applicable) just for the wheels

dont have a clue what rubber costs, I'll guess $5-700

Now if you build your own 790 at the regular deere.com website, the configurator allows you to "add attachments for field conversion" and it shows a pair of rear wheels with rubber for $812 and pair of fronts with rubber for $324 totalling $1136 b4 tax.....I dont know if you can out right buy the package after you already bought the tractor though.

Thanks, Steve -

I appreciate the research - that does seem awful high - I didn't know that you could order the different tires from the get-go....

I really like the R1s - but maybe I'll just fill the R4s - how much weight will water give me?

Thanks,

A few tire threads on the forum lately... swapping and buying and mud up to your armpits!

The deere.com configurator price for rims and tires is a little bit steep!

Anybody ever get a price reduction from their dealer off of the deere listed price?

Thanks.

Just got this back from my dealer:

Front two are $320 a pair and Rear are $820 a pair

Does sound high - so think I'll go and fill them first and see how that does - really I'm looking for stability - tractor is just very light and bounces around a bit more than I'd like when using the FEL and even the shredder (if I tako off the bucket....)

I think I'll fill with water and a little peak for corrosion control..

Flywheel,

I believe that your owner's manual has info regarding weight/ballast for filled tires for the different tire types (R1, R3, R4, etc.) that are available with your 790.

Should have estimates for rears and fronts as well.

Those dealer prices for steel and rubber?

AKFish - The manual doesn't have the estimated weights - unfortunately. It does recommend 90% fill, though - to minimize corrosion - as well as using cacl.

I just went and filled with water and put the rear pressure at 30psi - seems high.... Didn't notice much of a difference so far - maybe the tire pressure is a little high. Need to see what the tire says. I think those tires are rated for 4100lbs - that's 8000 for the rear. I don't see myself ever having that much weight - so I presume I can lower the pressure for a better ride?

RDLN - Yes - those prices are for wheels and tires - that's about $400 lowerr than I had seen elsewhere.

Thanks, fellas.

Glad to hear that you tackled the problem on your own and filled the tires. You should darn near be able to grab onto enough to stall your loader out and still have enough ballast. Especially if you hang a mower or box blade off your 3 pt.

Just checked my owner's manual for my 970 (wasn't sure if my dementia hadn't kicked in again..) to see if the weighted tire estimates weren't in there. Yup. There they were! Don't know what Deere did with the newer manuals.

Also just got a quote from the dealer for a steel and rubber package. They are willing to go with the configurator estimate from deere.com.

Keoke (fellow TBNer) has a 970 and has been running 8x16 fronts and 14.9x24 rears that are used on the 990.

I'll probably go with that option as well. Don't know if that's a good deal or not, though. $1,641 seems like a princely sum...

AK- Keoke doesn't visit much has he had any power loss to the ground, I wish I still had dealer brochures for my vintage but I coulda swore those tire sizes were an option for 970 as they are standard for 1070s

/ 790 Tire Questions #12
Steve,
I asked Keoke that very question. Thought it might change the gearing a bit. Not a problem, though. 16 inch on the fronts and 24 inch on the rears. Same diameters as on the 970. Just wider not taller. More surface area and floatation.
Still wondering if anyone has a quote from a dealer that is lower than the website listing. I guess that's what Flywheel referred to. The dealer quote was lower than the configurator....
My owners manual lists the 1070 with 28's on the rears. 13.6x28 and 8x16 on front.

Hi - I recently purchased a JD 790 w/loader. The owners manual suggest using a calcium chloride water solution in the tires for weight. What is the trade name for calcium chloride? Is there an alternative such as auto or RV anti-freeze that would not damage the tires or rims?

/ 790 Tire Questions #14
Data point guys. I have a 770 with turf tires and tubes. They are 13.4-16 I believe but don't quote me on this. They should be same size for 790. I was able to fit 32 gallons of windshield washer in each tire. At, lets say, 7.5 lbs/gal I added 240 lbs to each tire. The improvement is awseome, before I did this I needed to use 4x4 to reverse with FEL full of firewood. Good luck, and enjoy!

You can use beet juice (sold as RimGuard) or Wind Shield Washer Fluid.
You use antifreeze but that's toxic to animals (also attracts them) if you get a leak.

Calcium Chloride (CaCl) has been used in tractor tires for a lot of years. As long as the fluid level is above the rim, it won't corrode the rim. It's also the heaviest ballast for the price (which is why it's been used so long). My first tractor (Deere 670) had CaCl.

My 790 uses windshield washer fluid, BTW.

Flywheel:

I happened to be lurking TBN today after plowing out from a 13" snow storm when I saw this post. According to my NH TC29DA Owners Manual weighting a 11.2x24, 4PR, R1 with a H2O/CaCl2 would add ~253#'s, a 13.6x16, 4PR, R3 would gain ~333#'s, and a 19.50x15, 6PR, R4 would gain 334#'s. Jay

Hi AKfish and Rdln, the front tires on my 970 are not 8.00X16 they are Goodyear 240X70R16 DT810's. This radial R1 tire has the same height as the OEM 7.00X16 Firestone Field & Road tires but are 9.6 inches wide as compared to the OEM 7 inch wide R1's.
Had to change to 990 front rims (#LVA 10550, $78. ea) since the OEM rims were too narrow. My rears are 13.6X 24's and since the front Goodyear's have the same dia as the OEM's my front to back gear ratio is still in line.
I can kick the rears up one size and still be ok on the gear ratio thing.
The wide front tires work well when doing loader work on wet ground since the don't sink as much as the OEM's.
The only down side to this tire move was the bucks for the tires and rims. The clearance factor when turning tight (loader hoses) turned out just fine.
I am attaching a pic of my 970 with Bradco hoe (8') and Long 4n1 bucket.
Note extra glass pack muffler on vertical exhaust.
By the way, I still have the OEM 7.00X16 R1's if anybodys is interested.

will try to get on forum more often,

Roy,

I have asked my local dealer about RimGuard and they've never heard of it. He checked with the regional dealer's and didn't come up with any new information other than using foam in the tires... and of course calcium chloride. I refuse to use that stuff -- as I've seen what it does to rims and what a pain it is if you've got a leak (and it'll kill all your grass if it happens in the pasture...)

I'll admit that I haven't dug into the Internet and done a search on my own. I was really hoping that the dealer would have a source and I would be able to buy a small quantity from them.

Hey George,

I just ordered the stock set of R1's (rims and tires) for a 990 to use on my 970.

8x16 fronts and 14.9 x 24 on the rears (I think it's 14.9's..)

Probably should start a new post--- but, will that bugger up my gearing?
