Does the 790 have a continuous PTO. According to my local dealer it does, but the JD web site states otherwise? I'm thinking about buying one and this is one of my deciding factors. Thanks.

It has a live PTO, which you can engage with the 2 stage clutch.

When you press on the clutch, about half way down you disengage the transmission. If you continue to press further down all the way, you disengage the PTO.

Therefore if your PTO is engaged, you can stop the tractor from moving by pressing partly down on the clutch and still have the PTO running.

I am looking at 2wd models, and if I'm not mistaken they list the 2wd with a single stage clutch? I'm getting more and more confused by the minute! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

The 790 is a very good sturdy compact tractor. However, because of its relatively light weight, I find I need 4WD when doing loader work, grading, snow plowing, ...

What are you planning to use the 790 for ? Perhaps it might be worth spending the extra $ now to have 4WD and have no regret later.

I'm looking to use it mostly for finish mowing. I also have a small motocross track that will be maintained with it. Any idea how much $ fwd would add? The local dealer has the 2wd for $9800.

Reckon adding MFWD would cost about 2 grand..or less. But, that dual stage clutch is optional with the 2WD model and standard with the MFWD model.

Once you get the hang of it (short learning curve), the dual stage clutch is easy to use.

MFWD (Mechanical Front (or Four) Wheel Drive) is pretty handy, especially if you've a loader.

However, if you're not planning on a loader...I think I'd put the extra money the MFWD would cost you toward a hydro transmission.

Don't get me wrong..I'm strictly a gear guy! But, sounds like hydro would be a better way for you to go..if you're going to do as you posted.

The 790 is a mighty fine tractor. I really enjoy mine. But, for the tasks you described, MFWD wouldn't be particularly cost-effective.

"I think the 790 4wd has power steering too. "

I believe that's standard equipment
