But I don't think I have enough to even fill that machine.

We are in the midst of a drought that has lingered for over a year. We are running less than 50% of our snow/rain fall. Went out today and bought bales and bales of straw.

Was asked earlier in this thread if I intended to mulch. I answered no, I never have mulched. I am changing my mind. After two straight weeks of unbearable temperatures and no rain, I have been pumping water until I am weary of it. Tomorrow, the straw goes on everything. My hope is cut my watering needs down by shading the soil around the plants for moisture preservation. Pic will follow.

If you can get some large cardboard boxes, try that too. We used to put down the cardboard tucked in from both sides of the tomato row. Then we would add the straw on top. The cardboard really helped cut the weed growth and hold the moisture, and we didn't have to use quite as much straw. It all gets tilled in at the end of the season.

Thanks, Ford850. Too late perhaps for this year. The cardboard might be something to try in the future, although it would take one heck of a lot of it!!:D

OK, got up at dawn zero five thirty and got at it. Done. 5 1/2 rows @ 150'. That's likely 300 potato plants (50lbs of seed) and 100 tomato plants, plus, squash, cukes, pickles, and asparagus.
Heading to showers. At 8:30, I'm already soaked through.

Hey guys I need some help. One of my 'mater plants is getting black spots on the leaves, the spots are slowly spreading and the plant is withering. What is this and how do I get rid of it?

Here is a link to one of the best tomato problem troubleshooters I've found. The pictures are arranged by easy groupings so you can identify problems with fruit, leaves, stems, pests, etc.

Thanks Jinman!

Actually I pulled the offending plant this morning. The 3 next to it were very hardy and I didn't want to take a chance on the spot spreading. Seems like nasty stuff and I don't really want to use tons of pesticides to try to fix it. It's early enough I am taking bp fick's suggesting to start over.

Yeah, break it off, unless your aim was to grow some seed.:D

Man, those potatoes look great. Mine have jumped to 3 times their size since I posted the picture just a day ago. Amazing growth. Maybe I asked you earlier, Duffster, but what kind of 'tater did you plant?
