I took the brake valve completely apart and cleaned it. The fluid in the reservoir was black with a cakey substance on the bottom. I found the inlet check valve o-ring damaged (part #47 on diagram), and have a new one on order. I had recently replaced a different check valve (part # 11) following advice from another subscriber, but that alone didn't fix the issue. That check valve was completely broken. Not sure exactly how the hydraulic fluid flows, if it hits the steering unit first flowing through it, and then supplying the brake system.... or visa versa.
