6410 Hydraulic temp light coming on

If the steering had a problem I'd think it would be acting stupid. Play, hard to turn, sticking, etc.

I took the brake valve completely apart and cleaned it. The fluid in the reservoir was black with a cakey substance on the bottom. I found the inlet check valve o-ring damaged (part #47 on diagram), and have a new one on order. I had recently replaced a different check valve (part # 11) following advice from another subscriber, but that alone didn't fix the issue. That check valve was completely broken. Not sure exactly how the hydraulic fluid flows, if it hits the steering unit first flowing through it, and then supplying the brake system.... or visa versa.

Fixed! So it was combination of things causing the problems. A blown check valve and a broken o-ring in the brake valve were the two main culprits that started this mess. With these both broken the fluid was running through the brake valve unimpeded, and caused the pump to go into stroke continuously. As I searched to find the issues, I also rebuilt the pump and compensation valve to eliminate them as a source. During reassembly of the compensation valve I apparently miss counted by two whole turns and thus causing the pressures to be off after fixing the leaks. If I had found the leaks prior to rebuilding the pump I may have saved myself some grief. Either way, I know a lot more aboiut this machine now, and most importantly its back in the field. Thanks to everyone for their input!
