Ok well maybe 90 with all the picture taking.

We scouted this place, sort of a hidden half acre field that wasn't to far from the house. My wife and daughter went into town so I decided to play. It's really to late for a food plot this year (most all of the deer have gone 100% nocturnal), but it's a start for next year. Actually the soil looked promising for a garden this spring.

This is what it looked like at first, I made one pass before I took the pic.

Then after a mowing. Lots of briars and vines under there.

Some of yall have seen this homemade contraption I made from some old plow parts I got from my uncles place. there are 5 chisels to rake up the dead stuff. I don't put it to deep in the ground, at the end of the row I lift, back up to drop it, then head out again. It really cleans it up. I guess a landsscape rake will do the same. But this one was basically free!

Once I get most of the junk rakes off I remove 2 of the chisels, leaving only 3. They are spaced further apart so I don't pick up as much junk but I run deeper to loosen up the soil. First pic a before then after.

After I hand tosses some rye and used my ATV and drag to cover the seed and smooth it out. I thought about bringing the disc out but for this late in the season and the really loose soil it didn't need it. I'll start to disc in feb-march if it's dry.

Enjoy the pics if nothing else. I'll try to follow up with another in a couple weeks when the rye comes up. I only had enough seed for the right side so we'll see.

Thanks,
Rob

That's some nice red earth - lot different from my heavy clay.

Are you planning some deer fencing?

I was surprised to, if you look at the pic food-plot2 you can see a ledge in the background. That's actually a dug out place where they cam in and took out some soil, in that area there was that nice pea size iron ore stuff that is great for roads and driveways. None of that over here. Also in the back of that pic is an old 1 row corn head. PTO driven from a tractor. You never know what you find around some of these aparts.

No fencing planned, it's out of the way for those "loose" cows to find it (our main problem is tank cows..no fence can hold them). Most of the time in the past they bypast this place for a non grazed coastal field. Here's hoping!!

Thanks, well it could be messy, I've probably just "planted" 50,000,000 weed seads laying on top of the ground. :D We'll see. $20 in seed and some seat time this spring MIGHT get me a couple ears of corn. :D
