60 inch MMM maintence

I looked at my MMM maintenance manual and it calls for disassembling the gearbox every two years to replace the two oil seals. That seems like a pretty poor design where you have to completely disassemble the gear box every two years.

Does anyone actually do that? It looks like a significant project to replace the seals. I plan to inspect mine and if they are leaking I will replace them; if not, I will leave them be.

Has anyone replaced the seals?
How big of a job is it?

I wouldn't worry about the seals until I noticed oil gushing out of the gear box...just my opinion.

I'm coming up on the 6th year using my BX, and I have not noticed any leakage at all. I do change the gear box oil every spring. I plan on not worrying about the seals.

If you were using the deck in commercial service for 6-8 hours a day, the two year seal relpacement might make sense. Maybe buy the seals to keep on hand until it starts leaking. I think the power steering hoses are to be changed at two year intervals also.

I have over 1000hrs on a 1998 B2400 with an RCK60-24B deck and no oil leaks. I wouldn't worry about it. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I don't plan to replace the seals unless I see a leak. I was mostly interested in seeing if anyone has had to replace them and how long it took them.

I've owned a fair amount of equipment in my life and I can't recall any manufacturer suggesting that oil seals should be replaced every two years (even with heavy use). That suggests a design deficiency that they are trying to disguise by requiring more frequent owner maintenance.
