I inherited some land off my grandparents farm. This land is dear to me because of the great memories as a child spending time there - it essentially dictated my future decision to live in the country today.

My brother suggested we build a camp there. So, 6 weekends later...

It is a two hour drive to get there. Plus all of the supplies and gear had to be trucked or towed in - no local hardware store.

I prebuilt the walls at home and we assembled on site. The T&G was cheaper than plywood - our time was free.

There's a bit of trim work and battens to finish. Some structural stuff to clean up - cross bracing on the porch posts under deck etc. Next year we are going to insulate and finish interior and replace the wood stove. The stove is great to cook on but must be fueled ever 2-3 hours. Also, a certified stove is safer etc.

There are miles of woods to explore and a great fishing river to canoe on. Lots of deer, bear and rabbits.

Enjoy...

Lloyd, that's a terrific cabin and sure to provide perfect shelter for future visits. In one of the pictures I think I can see a generator in the back of a pickup, so I'm assuming you did not have to use battery powered tools and inverters off the vehicles for chargers. Is there a well on the property or do you have to haul in all your water? The scenery sure looks pretty too.

6 wk-ends: surely you had 25-30 people working on those wk-ends?? great job: can't figure out why t&g was cheaper than ply?

Lloyd, nice camp!

I have about 100ac in country harbour where id love to build a copy!

Where's the property located?

T&G with board and battens over that... that's pretty strong! I like the pre-built walls, too. I did an outhouse like that... Had it assembled in the basement with clamps holding the four walls in place... When it was time to put up, it took almost no time at all. Place looks great... Still working on mine. Got the roof on and some siding done but now, I've been helping some friends with their cabins... (payback time)

Teg, Nice site. I like the rock(lower right corner) wish we had flat building stone like that up here.

Scooby - 100 acres. That's my dream. We are on the Minas Shore.

Heehaw: 3/4" cheap ply is around $24 bucks. The 3/4 T&G #4 pine 1"x8" goes for $0.25 per linear foot. Do the math and it works out to about $13.00 or less. Takes more time to install but the material is cheap.

tally - yup same shape and proportions - when something works don't mess with it!

Jin- generator and some hand tools. I'm learning to hate the sound of a generator. I prefer the peace and quiet. There's an old well on the property that my cousin's husband re-dug and re-rocked. We use it for washing etc but we bring in our own drinking water.

There is also an old stone foundation to explore as well. This was the site of the original 1800's house that burnt down in the early 1920's - hit by lightning.

It was fun. Actually took some time to go for a stroll and a flood of memories came back.
I doubt the old tree house is still standing - I built it as a young teenager 35 years ago! Must look for it. LOL.

Thanks for looking.

Here are a couple of views of the area.

The tide was extremely high. Normally the river at high tide is 8-10' below the river bank. And you can actually see the river - not a lake! The night shot is of my brother. We walked for about 2 hours through cuttings and trails.

I use my DeWalt 18V tools all the time. When we had our little landscape company and were in the truck all the time, I bought a 12V charger for the truck.

I do not know how a 12v charger charges 18v batteries. Guessing they charge pump the voltage. Asked a DeWalt guy at Home Depot last week; he did not know how they did it.

I do not know if Rigid, Ryobi ect offer the same type charger?

I'm assuming you did not have to use battery powered tools and inverters off the vehicles for chargers.

Hi Lloyd...what are they catching in that river? My guess is smelts ...maybe shad....salmon?

Nice place! What is the foundation?
I thought the night shot was at halloween with that orange pumpkin on the veranda -- then I noticed the gun:p:p:p
Have you thought about using twelve volt lighting? -- then you can turn the generator off after charging batteries and still be able to see. I was at a camp in Manitoba where they did that and the generator was actually a little gas motor hooked to an alternator to re charge the batteries -- just a thought -- I really like the cabin (and the stove)

keegs,
Shad at the mouth of the river. The odd salmon but mostly trout. I haven't fished the river for years. My cousin was hauling out 14-16" trout this past summer towards the end of the river, 3-4 hour hike.

Studor. Yes to the 12 volt. I am looking at a small solar panel, deep cycle battery and inverter. We can purchase off the shelf 12 volt solar panels with lights. My brother enjoys the 'comforts' but I am trying to keep it as rustics and non-intrusive as possible. My vision is solar panels, composting toilet, wood stove and a stack of books.

The foundation is 12-30" of crushed shale. The base for the camp is concrete blocks 6"x18"x18" every 4 feet roughly over an 18 foot run. On top of the concert, spaced on 6 foot centers are three 8"x8"x18' creosoted timbers. On top of the timbers are 2x12's, double sills around the perimeter, joists. A 3/4" plywood deck is on top of the 2x12's. It is rock solid with lots of air flow and no contact with the earth. The camp is 12'x18' with an 8'x18' porch. The porch will be screened in for the summer. We will probably board in the porch and add a row of windows along the front at some point.

I stayed there a few weeks ago and the wind blew around 40 - 50 mph - didn't shake or move. It sits on top of a ridge with a river valley below. Not a lot of protection.

That looks great!! What are the inside dimensions? Is it one large open space, or is it partitioned?

trook...

The inside is 11.5'x17.5' - 2x4 walls. Open on main floor with a loft area of 11.5'x11' roughly. The ceiling of main floor is 7.5' to joists from floor. Joists are 2"x8"x12' clear span and doubled at wall, mid-way and start of loft area - O/C every 18". Loft floor is 3/4x8" T&G.

Egon... this is exactly what you need. So far we have 540 man hours into it.

Thanks

Lloyd

Great looking cabin. I love working with the T&G wood. We did the entire interior of our new cabin/1 bed room home with a stained T&G. It actually went up very easy and fast and now whished we would of also done the exterior with T&G.

Even having the stained T&G lumber shipped to us worked within our budget.
This it the place we got our T&G as we could not find and good quality local.

Lumber Prices * Cedar Siding Lumber Prices * Redwood Lumber Prices * Wholesale Lumber Prices!

That is a lot of hours! If those hours were translated into the time it would now take me to build something That would be a Lifetime!

Update...

Spent the first winter weekend at the cabin. Had to hike and sled in gear, extra firewood, food and H2o. Cabin got up to 76f inside and 10f outside.

Did a bit of work (exterior door trim) but mostly relaxed and read - reached my goal!

Enjoy the photos...
