'51 Cub Cam Removal

\'51 Cub Cam Removal

I need to get behind the camshaft gear on a 1951 Farm All Cub Cadet. The gear is press fit onto the camshaft. Can I just pull the gear and pound it back on, or do I need to remove theh entire camshaft? What steps do I have to take to remove the camshaft?

Any help is appreciated as I would like to get this thing back running this weekend.

Though I've not done it on a cub.. I can tell you from experience on ford camshafts, that you have a very good chance of not getting the gear pressed back on correctly.. that's a big timing problem. Ford camsafts now use bolt on timing gears for just this reason, instead of the pressfit fiber ones they used to...

I'm late reading this post, but I just replaced the cam gear on a super C, so the process should be the same. I loosened the valves, removed the push rods, dropped the pan and pushed the valve lifters up in their bores. You can then pull the camshaft. To replace the gear on the shaft. Put the shaft in the freezer overnite. When ready to install the cam gear, heat the oven to about 350 degrees and leave the gear in for about an hour. The gear will just fall on the cam. In a few minutes all will be tight.
