i have had a bx1860 since june and now it has 49.?? hrs on it. with at least another month left to cut grass i will put at least another 10-15hrs on it + what ever i use in the winter for snow removal. will i be safe to wait till spring to do the 1st service which is when i like to change the oil. or will i need to do it at or a little over 50hrs.

Best to do it when you have the time. Especially when doing it the first time. I don't know about you but spring is my busiest season. Fall and winter is a good time for me to service the equipment.

Personally, I'd do it once you're done for the season unless you're planning on 'clocking' it over the next month. You can let it go a couple of hours over, no different than changing your oil at 5200 miles instead of 5000..Nothing fatal will happen.

The 50 hr service will only eat up a couple of hours, including beer breaks. :drink:

Enjoy, you have a nice machine.

my main concern is condesation & letting fresh oil sit over the winter in a unheated garage

I see that you live in Ohio like me. I am hoping that this past weekend will be the last that I have to mow this year. One more good frost will insure that.

Generally it is considered best to change it in fall rather than let the used oil with possibly acid byproducts sit in the engine over winter.

It is a tractor, it is tough, it will be fine to let it go a few hours over the scheduled service time.

100 hours would be the absolute outside limit for the first oil change and only if the tractor has never overheated or been run hard for long periods.

You may want to consider a quick change of just the engine oil filter in the meantime. The oil filter is relatively inexpensive and several manufactures make them even though a OEM filter is not that much difference in price.

I'd bet there are tractors out there that have many, many hours on the original oil. Nobody on TBN would be included since just being a member shows your interest in being and keeping knowledgeable about your tractor.

Just realize that there is a possibility that some increased wear will happen with the delayed first service. But at approximately 100-150 hours a year it will be quite a while before it will show up - maybe 20 years.

I would do the service when it's due and not let the tractor sit all winter with dirty oil in the engine. Then come spring, you are good to go.

I pretty much go by the manual; ran over a bit a few times and so far nothing has fallen apart. We have tractors built in the 50's up to 2010.

Of course, the tractor isn't going to blow up at 51 hours!!

That'd be ludicrous. That said, it needs to be done. I'm not one for procrastinating, I guess. Sure, we all get busy and may over-shoot by a few hours, but honestly, it doesn't take all that long on a BX. Cleaning the screen on the HST was what I was after. Turns out? Mine was virtually spotless. One or two little shards.

The front axle should also be serviced, imho. These are notoriously low on fluid and I want the crud out, and synthetic gear lube in, 75w-90.

So, a simple oil change, clean the HST screen, (have over-sized cork or rubber tapered plug ready, swap out HST filter, (be quick and you'll only lose a pint), top off HST fluid, grease the treadle fitting under the floor mat flap, check radiator level, check the air filter, maybe blow it out gently with low pressure air, check the torque on the wheel lugs, air pressure on the tires and done. Seriously. 2 hours if you are slow as molasses and deliberate. An hour if you're speedy and quick with tools.

I dunno.

does the hts fluid need to be changed also. the manual says no and some people say yes. i have alway changed the oil in all my cars & trucks over the years i can usually go quick doing them but never done a tractor like this so i will take my time. the biggest problem is it not t shirt weather any more and i do not like the cold like did when i was younger since i will be dong this outside.

Heck, I think I've spent close to 2 hours just trying (unsuccessfully) to find one of the two hydraulic filters that are supposed to be on my B21...

Three litres of oil , $15 , and by the
time you're typed this question and read a few replies you could have
changed it out ................ What did the BX cost you ....... ten grand ?
...... and you're asking ............. :confused3:

Nobody likes to do mechanical work, in horrid, ambient winter temperatures.

Which is precisely why I force myself, discipline myself, to spend one of the gorgeous, autumn days in September or October doing maintenance. Honestly, I pay little to no attention to hour meters, because I am familiar with my usage of each piece of my equipment. I just prefer the Annual Maintenance Festival that happens in my shop, each fall. :)

Everything, if it's got an engine, it gets the once over, appropriate to it's age, use, scheduled maintenance, etc. Push lawn mower, riding lawn mower, walk behind roto tiller, Tractor, truck, boat motor lower end, etc, etc.

Stem to stern annual check ups. Attendance by all machines is mandatory. Done, and I no longer have to even think about it. I don't want to be doing maintenance in the dead of winter, nor during my busy summer growing season. We all have to find a way that works for us, and this is mine.

Ok, with all this being said, I have a L4400 with about 27 hours on it. I live in the Midwest and plan on getting it out occasionally when we have snow too deep for the walk behind snow blower. Would you let it sit over the winter with 27 hours or have the 50 hour service done early?

I'd wait. If you do the 50 hour at 27 hours it is just going to sit anyway. It will have clean fluids but condensation will happen with fresh oil as easily as old oil. Besides, you plan on starting it occasionally. Just let it run until it heats up enough to burn off the condensation.

The first fluid change is to get rid of the assembly garbage and initial wear particles. Waiting will not change this.

when i bought the bx i also got a 2.5gal jug of udt fluid. was reading the manual last night and it calls for super udt. am i safe to run the udt or should i try to exchange it for the super udt.

/ 50hr service #19
UDT will work fine that is what I just put in my 5030, my dealer says he doesn't even carry SUDT any more; winters here are not very bad.

I have also used other brands including NH, Case and Sinclair.

Many report that the HST runs quieter (and better in winter) with SUDT.

5030? Manual tranny? Yes, UDT probably perfectly fine. But for an HST, especially if used in winter, I would go with SUDT from everything I've heard.
