I bought a 09 5085M with 430 hours on it. THe last couple of days I've been using in the hay and have experienced sudden losses of power. In D range on the road if I start up any hill at all, the RPMs drop like a rock. It won't even start in D-1 on the incline. And also while rolling hay today, if I started up hills while rolling the power would drop suddenly.(In B range)

I was thinking it may be the fuel filters, which I will change ASAP. But, is this typical of these tractors? Any ideas?

Thanks

While changing fuel filter you could also check amount of fuel flow from tank to filters.

Yep, first thing to check/replace is fuel filter.

Thanks guys.

I did change the filters and has seemed to help some, really hadn't got to truly test it yet.

The fuel consumption with this tractor isn't good to say the least. Rolled hay for 9 hours the other day and it used at least 30 gallons, surly this isn't normal, is it? I understood that they were pretty good on fuel.

Thats pretty good on fuel I would say. A 6430 Premium uses 5-6 gallons / hour. A 7230R uses 10-12 gallons / hour.

But yes, please change your fuel filters and blow out your air filter. Check if your radiator fins are clogged too.

Well, the fuel filters may have helped a little, but very little. It still very weak, like when you are using the loader, it even bogs down and blows some black smoke. I know it is going to do it some, but it almost dies in some cases. I noticed puffs of smoke when on the road tonight, even at steady throttle.(1500-1700RPMs).

Also the error light come on(the one with the exclamation point) has been coming off on every once and a while. How do you check for errors?

Thanks for all the ideas and comments.

Do you still have warranty on the tractor?
Run a double to triple rate of diesel fuel injector cleaner. Run / work it for 2 hours and see what you get.

Try products such as these - Any of these products are good. I've used the PS DK and the Winter formula and it works good and I've used winter formula from Howe's Lube
DIESEL KLEEN® +Cetane Boost®: Max HP Formula ? use during non-winter months for the ultimate in performance.

To pull the codes, shut the tractor down and then turn the key to the run position, press and hold the switch that toggles the display for a couple seconds, it will then show you the error codes that is stored.
