I decided at 49.4 hrs to do the 50 hr service. I knew I would have no trouble because I
read here where so many others had done their own with no problems.

First problem. I owned two filter wrenches. One was too large, one was too small.
Called the wife and told her to run to Sears and get a strap wrench. Then I remembered
that a filter wrench came with the tractor. Called wife back and told her not to bother, I
had a wrench. Oil change went OK.

Checked the manual (again) and saw that I had 3 plugs to remove to drain all the hydraulic
fluid. Obviously picked the wrong one to start with. The fluid shot out of the drain hole
and went all over the inside of the right wheel. I was holding the drain pan up as close as
possible and getting fluid on the tractor, the floor and me. (You also need to make sure
the vent hole is opened on the drain pan, it would have flowed in a lot better if it had been)
Got all the fluid out. Filter wrench fit filter number two just fine. Then I removed the
filter screen and cleaned it. Had trouble finding the correct place to locate the screen line,
the manual leaves a lot to be desired.

Filter # 3. Wrench did not fit. Now I make the trip to Sears and buy the strap wrench.
Got the filter off and changed.

Got the first 2 gallons of that cheap Super UDT in without a hitch. Drained about 2
quarts off the top of the second gallon into clean container to be sure that I wouldn’t put
too much in. The book calls for 3.8X gallons. So this way I only can put in 3.5, then I
can top it off. Sounds good. Overfilled the thing.

Took it out in the rain and washed off all the fluid, sure is slick and sticky. Tomorrow I
will reattach the loader and check the fluid again. May have to drain out a little.

Glad this doesn't come around too often. Maybe next time would be a good time to have
the dealer service it during his winter special time.

I just did my 50 hour service and like you - I made a MESS.
The last thing you want to do is spill a drop of liquid gold, so I poured slowly and it didn't overflow.
The only thing I also did was change the front axle case hydro while doing everything else. Once those plugs were removed the old fluid ran down both front wheels. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
Like you said - glad this doesn't need to be done to often.

I let my manuals go with the tractor when I sold it, but I seem to recall that were 4 plugs and I missed one the first time; probably the reason you overfilled it.

Did you have to remove the loader to do the service? I am soon going to do the 50 Hr. service on my BX 22.

I too recently did the 50 hr service (2410). Oil change went well. Found all 4 drain plugs and drained hydraulic fluid with only small puddle of fluid missing the drain pan. HST filter on easily and cleaned hydraulic screen without incident. Went to remove the hydraulic filter and couldn't budge it with usual filter wrenches - had to resort to vicegrips filter wrench (only 1 step before driving spike through filter to twist it off!). Once this last filter removed I couldn't get the new filter on. javascript:void(0)

I pulled the rear wheel to make sure I wasn't trying to spin the filter on at an angle - no luck. I began to suspect that the original filter had been put on cross-threaded.

Fortunately I had an appointment at dealer next day (to install loader) so I simply pushed my tractor on to my trailer and delivered to dealer next day. Held my breath as mechanic tried to install filter without success. I suspected that I was going to need a new screw joint (part filter screws onto) but mechanic used grinder on end of joint screw and filter went on easily. He claimed he had seen it once before. Filter hasn't shown any signs of leaking so I guess I'll have to wait until next change to see if I have same problem again - or maybe leave to dealer to change it next time. javascript:void(0)

I already had the FEL off for mowing. I would have taken it off though. It was much easier to service the machine with it off, instead of having to work around it.

I found out how I overfilled it. The containers of Super UDT were 2.5 gallons. I thought they were 2 because of the markings on the back that show the different levels. I had removed 2 quarts thinking I was putting in 3.5 gallons, instead I put in 4.5 gallons.

Today I removed the excess fluid and all is well.

Looking back at the whole thing, now that I have the appropriate filter removing wrenches (multiple) and know which plug to remove first, I will not hesitate to do it again.

The only thing left to do is to do more cleanup on the garage floor. I'm letting the kitty litter absorb as much as it can before the sweeping and mopping.
