I decided at 49.4 hrs to do the 50 hr service. I knew I would have no trouble because I
read here where so many others had done their own with no problems.
First problem. I owned two filter wrenches. One was too large, one was too small.
Called the wife and told her to run to Sears and get a strap wrench. Then I remembered
that a filter wrench came with the tractor. Called wife back and told her not to bother, I
had a wrench. Oil change went OK.
Checked the manual (again) and saw that I had 3 plugs to remove to drain all the hydraulic
fluid. Obviously picked the wrong one to start with. The fluid shot out of the drain hole
and went all over the inside of the right wheel. I was holding the drain pan up as close as
possible and getting fluid on the tractor, the floor and me. (You also need to make sure
the vent hole is opened on the drain pan, it would have flowed in a lot better if it had been)
Got all the fluid out. Filter wrench fit filter number two just fine. Then I removed the
filter screen and cleaned it. Had trouble finding the correct place to locate the screen line,
the manual leaves a lot to be desired.
Filter # 3. Wrench did not fit. Now I make the trip to Sears and buy the strap wrench.
Got the filter off and changed.
Got the first 2 gallons of that cheap Super UDT in without a hitch. Drained about 2
quarts off the top of the second gallon into clean container to be sure that I wouldn’t put
too much in. The book calls for 3.8X gallons. So this way I only can put in 3.5, then I
can top it off. Sounds good. Overfilled the thing.
Took it out in the rain and washed off all the fluid, sure is slick and sticky. Tomorrow I
will reattach the loader and check the fluid again. May have to drain out a little.
Glad this doesn't come around too often. Maybe next time would be a good time to have
the dealer service it during his winter special time.
