How about helping a newbie? My dealer wants $180.00 for a 50 hour service. Is this something that the average shade tree mechanic can do or is it something that really should be done by a dealer the first time to check the tractor over for potential problems/warranty issues? The tractor is a 7510 DT. Any advice will be much appreciated.

Just follow the owners manual, nothing to it.

While you are at it, check the torque on the various bolts and fasteners. Check for leaks, hydraulic, etc. Clean the air cleaners and radiator. Check the tractor over in general.

I was just at my dealer today to research the 50 hr. service. They wanted $395 to do one. I bought the parts to do it myself for $65.

Servicing of a tractor at the dealer amazes me. Not anyone having it done there, that isn't the problem. It took years for car dealers to realize that servicing cars is a good way for them to get the owners to frequent their dealership. The more they frequent the dealership the more they buy other things or trade cars and the less likely that they will do repairs at home. You would think that tractor dealers would catch on and drop the price.
