4x4 Pick up truck vs. tractor?

Actually wheel speed does make a difference. Being a redneck I've been stuck quite a few times and under various conditions while testing the abilities of trucks, 4-wheelers, etc.:D I can say for sure that slow spinning wheels won't get a vehicle unstuck or up a muddy hill as easilly as fast spinning wheels. I'm not sure if this agrees with the laws of physics, but it does make a difference. Partially from cleaning the tires and maybe centrifugal force has something to do with it? I agree that if you can keep from spinning the wheels you're better off though.
What youre doing there is using the tire with most traction more effectively. The torque used to accelerate the spinner is applied thru the differential to the other wheel as well. Since that wheel has traction you get some push. It can fool you -that is a special case causing an apparent traction benefit from spinning. There is none unless you are throwing a LOT of stuff backwards.

I've never been one to try to argue especially over silly things, but I still say there is something more to it than that.:D I've had several 4-whhelers, jeeps, pickup trucks etc. Some with open diffs and some with locked axles. Yes an open carrier may apply SOME "push" to the wheel with traction, but not much. Besides in solid axle stuff there is no diff action......Say jo blow took a 4x4 pickup to his local 4x4 club. He attempts to take off on a mild slope with an inch of slime on top and does it at idle in low gear then starts to spin and says "well, I'm stuck get the chain" He would be a laughing stock.:p Now if he were to get the tires spinning about 60 mph he'd likley go right up it. Anyone who disagrees with this hasn't done much off roading. I'm not just talking mud either it works in dirt, grass, and even snow! lol... BUT in a pull off with opposing forces I'm not sure if it would work the same or not.....All I'm saying is something about wheel speed will help a vehicle move.;)

I know from experience that my '94 ford f250 powerstroke 4 x 4 will outpull my Kubota B2710 HST (27 HP, 20 PTP HP). Man that truck has some torque.

Yeah I think that is a no brainer:D

LOL, I keep thinking of the debate about an airplane being able to take off on a conveyor belt when reading this thread. :D

I think some people may be surprised at what gearing and traction will do. I haven't the foggiest idea what hp the old JD 1070 tractor I had long ago had. I had an FEL on it along with loaded ag tires. At the time I also had a 4X4 Chevy 3500 with a 6.5 turbo diesel (which, believe it or not, I got great service from). I got my CJ-7 Jeep stuck running a fence row and tried to pull it out with my truck and couldn't do it. Granted, I only had a chain with me and not a snatch strap; but I couldn't get it out.

Of all people, my wife (yeah, how embarrassing) told me to use my tractor to pull it out. Well, being a manly man, I explained to her that my 1 ton 4X4 diesel pickup not only weighed, what, 2 or 3 times as much as the little tractor, but had tons more power. Not to be deterred, the little lady kept after me. So, just to prove her wrong, I hooked the chain up the draw bar of the little 1070 and the other end to the hook on the front of my trusty old Jeep (I miss it. It had 42" Super Swampers on it and was really cool off road). By the time I even get the Jeep started and in gear she has me halfway dragged out of the dang hole! Yeah, I ate plenty of crow over that!

Ever since, I'd say it definitely depends (depends on a lot of things) whether a relatively small tractor or a 4X4 pickup will pull harder. I ain't talkin' no more about that day when I had my man card pulled; at least for a temporary time anyway. :)
