One of the hyd cylinders on my 48 backhoe is leaking to the point I really need to consider replacing it - seems that there have been several postings as to the lousy quality of these cylinders and noting the point that apparently they cannot be repaired but must be replaced - therefore the question comes as to where do we obtain a "better" cylinder as I am not to excited about replacing with a JD part that would assumedly need replacing again in the near future.

Why do you say that the cylinders cannot be repaired?

I just checked the JDParts website and it appears that all cylinders on the 48 backhoe have a complete set of components available for purchase. In addition to that, a good local hydraulics shop will likely stock or be able to obtain or manufacture any required parts.

I would think that it would be well worth your while to compare the cost of having a leaking cylinder repaired to the cost of a new cylinder.

I stand somewhat corrected - mine apparently can be rebuilt - evidently not all cylinders on the 48 backhoe were built the same way -- I was originally told that they could not be rebuilt and honestly had taken that information at face value. When I called another JD dealer - he advised that mine were the type that could be rebuilt - so will take them off and leave it for several days. Would do myself but apparently a special spanner wrench is required to remove the caps - they will do the labor for $50 so that will be the route to getting the cylinder fixed.

Glad it worked out for you! Sounds like you connected with a good dealer.
