I recently bought a 2001 4600 with HST. I have been trying to get the cruise control to work properly. It will hold the set speed as long as I hold the switch in, but as soon as I let it go it stops. I hope I just don't know how to operator it properly. Any ideas what going on?

Make sure the brake pedals are coming all the way up. If they are find the brake switch and check it.

JD855guy, Thanks for the tip. I haven't had a chance to try check yet but will as soon as the rain quits.

:welcome: to TBN

Add your location to your profile, and a bit more about the history of the 4600.. both will help with answers.

You mention rain, so wonder if the 4600 has spent a lot of time out in the weather?

Expect you know that the 4600 has a magnet that holds the forward pedal at the position you want to "cruise" at, and touching a brake pedal will release that hold.. thus checking the position of the brake pedal I presume as JD855 suggested.

I checked the position of the brake pedals when I was at the barn this morning and they seemed to be fully released, but that is after it has set for a couple of days. I have only owned the tractor for about a month and it has been barn kept during that time. It appears to have been kept out of the weather most of is life (no significant rust or faded paint). Only 1130 hours, only 8 hours are mine, so I don't have much experience with this tractor.

I will try to get my profile updated and may add a pic of the tractor.

Found this page in the service tech manual that may help check it out.. this is for the switch. Appears there are two different setups that you will need to sort out.
There is a test also for the magnet, but suspect you know that works as it holds when you hold the cruise switch down.
But the test brings up a possible clue.. that is the PTO being engaged. But think I've used cruise control with the PTO running so that shouldn't be contributing to your problem.. I don't think anyway. But some combinations of these safety systems are perplexing sometimes.

Thanks, that looks fairly easy to test. I know the safety systems are going to painful to deal with since all my previous tractors have been from the 1960's.

Do you know of a low cost download site for a service manual?
