We use a 4520 with finish mower. The PTO is (stalling) in grass that would go right through previously. The engine rpm's do not drop and the clutch on the mower driveline is not slipping. So is the PTO hydraulic driven? Does the PTO have engagement handle operate a clutch? The primary operator was not checking hydraulic oil. I added 1 gallon. First lesson I have learned DO NOT expect employees to check fluids!

Your PTO is hydraulic driven, multi plate wet clutch. There is a PTO valve that is electrically operated, with a solenoid. Your problem could be electrical, fuse, broken wires/connector, bad solenoid.

Depending what transmission you have the system holds between 9.6 and 10.3 gallons. I doubt loss of 1 gallon caused the problem

Clonebeef, I have the same problem, 4520 with a MX6. How was your problem resolved?? Thanks.

I have a 4120 CUT that when the pto is engaged it will turn on the MX6 but will stop when lowered to cut grass. What is the problem and what is the cost to fix it.

What part of the PTO system stops?
Where attached to the tractor PTO?
Or stops at the gear box behind the PTO clutch on the MX6?

Doesn't matter if tiller or clipper or something as light and easy as a spreader (three point it quits at the tractor. It just can't turn anything. Just no power to the shaft at the tractor.

I'd say at this point your pto clutch is shot and no amount of clamping pressure will revive it. Problem is, the only way to access the clutch is to split the unit and remove the clutch pack that way and then rebuild it.

True it is likely in the PTO tractor clutch. Get a service tech manual for the 4120 and see how it can be serviced.

Here is link to JD parts showing the PTO clutch assembly for the higher s/n 4120 and HST. Poke around for more info that can help you.
