JD 4500
I am the new guy so I will apologize now for any ignorance. I was looking for a tractor and found a deal on a Mahindra 4110. I then stopped by my JD dealer and of course he slammed them. I started looking at the 4500 w/ loader which looks to be a good tractor but then he had a new '00 5310 fwd w/loader for around $23000. A far cry from $17500. for the Mahindra with a bunch of attachments but it seems like a deal on the 5310. So what is my question? Are Mahindra tractors any good? Is it worth going to the 5310 vs. the 4500 for 25 acres of hilly rock, creek bed, etc?

Tough question, Bulverde. A lot depends on personal preference. You might want to do a search on the word Mahindra. There was some discussion about them in the past, and at least one member who thinks they're good tractors. I looked at them at a local dealership, sat on one, but didn't even drive one. Personally, I'd be scared of it, but that's just me. I don't really know anything about durability, parts availability, etc. And I think if you consider resale value, the difference in price between the Mahindra and Deere would be worth it. As for the 4500 vs 5300, I always say to get the biggest thing you can afford and have room to maneuver, but either one should be more than adequate for you, in my opinion.

Definitely worth going with the 5310 over the Mahindra. Just to name a few service, parts, availability, resale, durability, warranty, etc. You get what you pay for and I'm sure that 5310 will be far and above the extra 5k you'll pay for it. That Mihandra will be in the junkpile when the John Deere is just getting broken in.

If I read this right... new '00 5310 fwd w/loader for around $23000 and I translate that to mean...
a brand new, 2000 model, John Deere 5310, 55 PTO HP Turbo-charged, MFWD, with 541 Loader for $23000. U.S. currency... either the dealer fell out of bed and bumped his head or it's a buy!

I mean BUY this tractor @ $23K before the dealer comes to his senses... my numbers indicate this is below dealer cost

I would be interested in what price the dealer wanted for the JD4500 with loader.

Sorry, as you can tell I am new to purchasing tractors. it is a brand new 5310 (I wasn't aware that it was turbo) '00 model 4 wheel drive with 541 loader. However I think it is collar shift. The dealer says that the 5105 is coming out and is much cheaper. They have 2 5310's and are trying to blow them out. I just wonder if the 5310 is overkill for 25 acres and I am told that attachments are more expensive.
As for the price on the 4500...I think it was $17700.00 for the tractor and $3200.00 for the loader. I think the dealer is not discounting the 4500 to make the 5310 more attractive.

Bulverde,
Would you mind giving me the name and phone number of that dealer?
Thanks,

Not at all. Can you wait until I decide? They have 2 so there will be one for you as well. I am making my mind up by Monday.

Oh no problem at all I was just going to use it as negotiating power for my dealer. I'm thinking of selling my Massey and getting a little bigger john deere than my 4600 to use at another 60 acres I bought for haying.
Thanks,

cowboy...Boy did I screw up. It is a 5210 not 5310. (I thought there was no turbo) However, the dealer is Mission Equipment in San Antonio, Texas. Ask for Charles and tell him that Kurt Nelson sent you. I think I am going to go for the 4500 or 4600 since the 5210 has collar shift. Still seems like a deal though. Are you going to sell your 4600? What year and specs?

Nah... 5210 average price. (45 PTO hp)

The JD5105 MFWD w/ FEL should land at about $21.5K (40 PTO hp w/same 179 PowerTech engine, can be tweeked to low 50's)
