I have a friend who is suffering between the choice of the which 4000 TWENTY series to buy. He will definately get eHydro, FEL, and a Rotary Cutter. Prob will get Ag tires, definately 4x4.

He will be doing a lot of clearing, grading with Box blade, loader work on a new homeplace on a small weekend farm in NE Alabama. He has a 20 acre field that is in great shape and ready to plant as a food plat for Dove hunting.

He will have 15-20 acres of field to bush hog and there are some pines thrown in the field in random fashion, so I think his cutter width will be somewhat limited.

Long story short, he loves 4000 Twenty series but is worried a 4320 is not powerful enough, but at the same time doesn't want to waste $3,000 on HP if he doesn't need it. The 4 cyl turbos in these tractors produce a lot of torque for their size (48Hp deere produces more torque than a 55HP Case/NH).

He has been quoted about $24,000 for a 4320 with Hydro and 400X loader and Ags.

I belive a 4520 is about $1500 more and a 4720 is another $1500 beyond that.

Any input from you experienced tractor owners?

If it helps, as far as raw muscle goes - we have a 4120 without the eHydro. This winter when it was wet out and about 1/2 of snow on the ground, I was able to drag a HUGE stump with soil attached (a lot of soil) up and down slopes with R4 tires and no trouble at all! No spinning, nothing. Just a tiny bit of spin if any at all from the way I remember it. My in-laws have an old Ford 640 with R1 tires and I've seen them drag some pretty big trunks around...but they couldn't budge this stump. I was wondering why it was still out in the field because they're usually very good about cleaning up. They paid a professional back hoe guy to dig it out and there it sat for months until I saw it and threw a chain around it /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
For reference, I'd say the stump/root ball was very close to if not every bit of 5 ft tall. No joke. And I've also pushed along an even bigger rootball/stump that had no good place for a chain. I just put the loader on the ground behind it and let 'er rip. Nothin' like a little extra black diesel smoke and turbo whistle to get ya slimlin' /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif I'd say so far I've only been limited by my traction issues with the R4's. But so far I've been able to do anything we needed on the 18 acres (rolling hills) I maintain for my father-in-law.

Keep in mind, these 20 series are the exact same size no matter which model you get. So unless you REALLY need a lot more power, I bet even the 4120 would knock that out.

I am also in a similar situation. It is interesting that there are never any 4120's on the JD lot but there are plenty of 4720's, 4520's and 4320's.

Why.......my guess is more profit. Since they all have the same basic block, I bet it will be no time before some one figures out how to modify them to the higher hp

I've got over 100 hours on my ehydro 4120 and I've put it through the paces with heavy bushogging, mowing, loader work, phd work on our 40 acres and I've never run out of power, only traction. I almost think you'd need to be on asphalt or pavement to get enough traction to use all the hp. I've been moving large old compacted dirt piles next to a stream recently and I've been amazed. The limit is the size of the bucket as much as the lifting power of the loader. Engine hp has not come into play yet for me.

I'm thoroghly pleased with my 4320 hydro, amazed at the power it has. Ran right through some 4 and 5 in. black locust trees with ease. Brush hogged back five with LX6 and went right on through 2" poison sumac like butter.....the rocks were another story! Makes your butt pucker when you launch or shatter a field stone.
Basically these fine machines have more power than you can think of and no matter the power range, you'll be happy! If you want and can afford the extra 1500 or 3000, more power can't hurt. I only upped the power to 4320 because I wanted it for the larger frame sized unit, but seems the 4120 has made plenty happy also! Go with what your head tells you, you can't go wrong with GREEN MACHINE!

Have your friend go with the 4720 if he can afford it. Very few individuals ever make the mistake of getting too much HP...it's more often a problem the other way around. Your friend will always find those extra chores around the property that'll require that extra HP.
