JD 4310, eHydro - R4, dual SVC, speedmatch/cruise, rear floods
Hi All,

I want to thank you all so far for the valuable input I have gotten by reading these postings. It has caused me to call into question the pricing on 4300's at a particular JD dealership in Connecticut, Midstate Tractor.

I went to JD's website and used their price configurator to get the list price of the following:
- JD 4300, HST 4WD, R4 Tires, mid pto, foldable ROPS, dual svc, power beyond and 2 rear worklights
- 420 fel with 61" HD bucket pre-drilled, bucket level indicator, and rear 3pt box weight
- 47 backhoe with 16" bucket
- 59" 2 stage snowthrower

The respective list prices were:
JD 4300 = $19,976
420 fel = $3,258
47 backhoe = $6,579
59" snowthrower = $4,085
TOTAL = $34,198

The guy I talked to at Midstate in Connecticut said that the best he could do was 10% of list. He said dealer would go out of business at 20%. In the past on tractorbynet postings, I have seen more than one person say that you should get at least 15% off list and some were getting higher than 20%. Will another dealer look at me like I've got three heads and a tail if I ask expect 15% off list?

I also saw on this site that it is safe to assume that the dealer paid about a third off list (33%) for the tractor. Is this all because we aren't in the heart off Deere Country here in Connecticut?

Should I try out of state? I also heard that JD is coming out with some 40-10 series or something to that effect that will replace the 4000 series. It was mentioned that pricing might be better on these, not to mention the hydraulic/steering leaks and other issues may be fixed. What do all you guys think? Gotta convince the wife and gotta figure out the best way to negotiate with these dealers. Any input whatsoever from someone who bought a 4300 from a Connecticut dealer would be very helpful. Thanks in advance,
Jonathan

That's a crock that they would go out of business at more than 10% off. The price that the dealers pay is the same all across the country. The best I've been able to come out with, and this is not written in stone, is that dealer markup is 30-40%. I have routinely gotten 20% off and more of list without even a bat of an eye. Granted I usually pay cash but they still have to make a buck and it's not like I am even a big customer so I know that they are still making money. When I got my backhoe they gave it to me for cost and it was around $5k. List is over $7k so there is over 40% markup. I got almost 30% off on my 4600 with a little bit of haggling. Now remember this is just what I've been able to do around here where deere dealers are a dime a dozen. But I do know that they all pay the same price regardless of where they are.

Thank you Cowboydoc!!!

So I am not crazy after all. This was a first pass with MidState, maybe they would starting walking the walk if I dangled a bank check in front of them. I will continue looking around. That is very useful to know that all the dealers pay the same. Some of these dealers are worse than used car salesmen ( don't mean to knock the good ones out there :)
Thanks again! Anyone in Connecticut, could you recomend a dealer or describe your experience?

I purchased a new JD4300 HST this spring with 430 FEL , R4 Tires(Loaded), Dual SCV, Folding ROPS, and a 48 Backhoe. I don't know what list was but I purchase the package for $25,000. Hope this helps.

Dsulli,

Is your JD4300 a 4wd? I'm going to start looking in PA, NY and MA. Does your dealer have a website? It seems as though the JD dealers in Connecticut just don't want to deal. I think they are used to people just paying for whatever they ask. I love the product, but there seems to be a certain level of arrogance at the dealers around here.

Did you have to really haggle to get that price or were they fair from the start?

I notice that Midstate Tractor in Connecticut wanted like four thousand more than your total price if you eliminate the snowblower I had quoted. Not to mention, the 47 is a lesser backhoe, you got a 48.
Hmmm.
Thanks,
Jonathan

Jonathan,
I found the NH, Vt, and ME prices higher than most of the posts here from around the country.
I purchased in April, and here are my details.

Delivered price: $23,348
This was from Northern Maine.

Yes, my 4300 is a Hydro with 4WD. The dealer is in Towanda PA. The name is Rolling Acres. I don't think they have a web site. Friends of mine recommended the dealership. I live about 50 miles from the dealer and he delivered for free. I'm sure you could work something out. Ask for "Ken" he's the owner. I also was able to try out both the 47 and 48 backhoe. The 48 is really a heavier/stronger machine, with an extra foot of digging depth. If you can afford the extra money, buy the 48. I did haggle a little bit, but his initial offer was within a $1,000 of where we ended up.

Thanks guys!!! I feel empowered.... This is forum is a great source of uncensored information. The dealers must not like this... I've learned more on this site and looking at the tractor than from any dealer. This is a big help for a first time buyer.

Has anyone heard when the new 40-10 series is coming out? I'm wondering from a price standpoint if it makes sense to wait till fall or next spring if the new series comes out. Maybe the 4300 prices will fall, or is this wishful thinking...???
Thanks,
Jonathan

Don't know a thing about tractor dealers in that area, but spent about 4 months in that neighborhood on a little job in '93 and believe overall we found the nicest folks in the country./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
