422 robins engine won\'t turn off

I've been having this problem that has gotten worse over time. I can't turn off the engine with the key anymore. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I used to be able to push up or down on the key when in the off postion and it would turn off. I took the switch out and checked it with my multi meter and it looks ok.... i think. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I noticed in a prior post someone having a problem that looked to be a short in the kill circuit and i wonder if maybe i may have a problem with an open in the same circuit.

What do you all think?

Re: 422 robins engine won\'t turn off

What the switch is supposed to do is to ground out the magneto in the off position. You can check this out by taking the kill wire off the terminal and start the engine. With the engine running, and the grounding wire off, turn the switch off. The engine should keeping running. Now, touch the wire that you removed , using insulating pliers, to ground. The engine should stop. Why, because you are grounding out the magneto. If you don't use insulating Pliers, it will get your attention real quick. A new switch should be about $ 20.00

Re: 422 robins engine won\'t turn off

Thanks for the suggestion J_J.

I'm thinking you are right about the switch, I'm going to get a new one on monday. I reconnected the switch with out it being mounted in the dash, and it worked fine.

I think that things are alittle out of alignment inside the switch because if i more than hand tighten the mounting nut, then the ability to turn off the engine is pretty intermitant with me wiggling the key.

I currently have the switch mounted and just tight enough to keep it from turning in the dash if im careful.

Oh ya i forgot to mention that i fixed the left head light while i was there, it looked to me when somebody zip tied the wiring they put too much pressure on the wire running to the left head light and pulled the wire out of the crimp connector. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Re: 422 robins engine won\'t turn off

How about the fuel shutoff solenoid on the carburetor? Is it operating properly?

Re: 422 robins engine won\'t turn off

I don't know. I hear a click back by the engine when i turn the key off or on, I'm guessing that is the fuel shutoff solenoid?

The engine shuts off ok but I'll need to get a replacement switch because i can't tighten it down so it has a tendency to turn in the dash.

Thanks for the interest. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: 422 robins engine won\'t turn off

Just a little update on my starting problem on my 1445. Even with a new switch, engine still would not start. So I have had to raise the hood and lay a screw driver across the hot lug and start terminal and start the engine. I decided to remove the old start wire, and run a new wire through tunnel and connect to switch and start terminal on the starter. Now, works like it is supposed to. I wish I had a wiring diagram, but alas, Pt doesn't have any either, and don't care.

<font color="red"> I wish I had a wiring diagram </font>

I know what you mean. I'm looking at this ign switch socket that plugs into the switch to see if i can figure out what goes to what to see if i can use one of the universal switches available around here.

Re: 422 robins engine won\'t turn off

Call Terry he told me what wires go where, I don't have it with me here, I will try to remember to bring it to work with me tomorrow. My 422 has 5 terminals in the plug [which they only use 4] and an extra terminal on the side that has a black wire going to it. I do know the green wire goes to the ignition that is the wire I had all trouble with.

Re: 422 robins engine won\'t turn off

I have a wiring diagram for the switch. I have the Robin engine. Will this help? Ican send you a description tonight.

Re: 422 robins engine won\'t turn off

On my ignition switch, if you look on the back of the switch, you can see letters by each terminal that indicate what wire is what. Be careful of using just any 5 lug switch, you just might fry the ign module, and there are many 5 lug switches available.

Re: 422 robins engine won\'t turn off

This is what Terry told me.
S- Black Wire
L- White [runs fan]
M- Green [ignition]
B- Red [starter]
This is about all I know, or can figure out from the wiring diagram in the manual.

Re: 422 robins engine won\'t turn off

Are you certain about the red wire, that should be the 12 volts to the switch, terminal "B" which is for Battery. The wire hooked to "S" terminal should be the start wire. The "M' usually stands for magneto, and is grounded when you turn the switch off. The "L" is for load, in this case, it is the fan. The fifth terminal probably has a "G" for ground, and sometimes is not used because the switch is grounded. A good meter can easily check out your switch. If I am wrong, please let me know. The Kohler uses different colored wires. but the lettering is usually the same. I just rewired my switch on my 1445, and now works like it should.

Re: 422 robins engine won\'t turn off

I agree with your color code from the manual on my 2000 PT422. The diagram says Kohler engine, but I have the Robin.

Re: 422 robins engine won\'t turn off

Well just to add to the confusion. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

This is the info i got from Keith.

wire color - lug letter
Green - L
White - G
reb - B
black - S

Re: 422 robins engine won\'t turn off

The confusion lies in the fact that there is a wiring harness from the switch connector, and the connector for the engine.
The below data was obtained from the service manual for the engine.

Ignition Switch

B lug 12 volt supply from the battery.
S lug In start position, B and S are connected internally.
L lug Is for accessories such as fan or lights.
M lug Is used to ground the magneto through a stop diode.
G lug Is used as ground if there is no metal to mount switch.

The wiring from the switch sometimes has its own color code. In the engine service manual, they don't show the intermediate wiring harness. There are to many applications.

Re: 422 robins engine won\'t turn off

Does my explanation above agree with your switch setup?

Re: 422 robins engine won\'t turn off

The 22 hp, and the 25 hp Robin engines appear to use the same switch.

The 25 hp Kohler uses most of the same lettering, except for the "A" lug. It is for accessories, carb, fan, oil sentry.

The "L" lug on the Robin switch is for load, fan, carb, and oil warning lights.

Re: 422 robins engine won\'t turn off

Replacing the ignition switch fix the shut off problem. It was in stock at the local tractor store. Only $5 dollars cheaper and no shipping.

replacement was Oregon 33-399. Replacement for Scag #48798 and Briggs #493625
