I have a 4110 with 4WD and front end loader (250 hours) The other day I was driving the tractor and the tractor made a bumping sound along with sort of surges. I had a hard time getting the tractor out of 4WD, but it ran fine after that. Now I can't get it back into 4WD. The lever/linkage seems to be moving, but maybe not far enough. What could it be? What can I try?

Hello Jim Bob and welcome to TBN.
Follow the linkage from the handle to the transmission case. Move the handle to see if all the linkage is indeed moving. You may be lucky and have a pin out. If all of the linkage is moving and it isn't going into 4wd, then it will be time to go to the dealer. Good luck. Another thing, most find it helpful to spray the linkage with some kind of lubricant if it doesn't work just right or is hard to work. I personally use a lot of PB Blaster. When taking it out of 4wd, it helps to move the handle as you back the tractor up slowly or some even raise the front-end off the ground with their loader.

My 4110 at about 100hrs spent 5 weeks in the shop for the four wheel drive. It made noise in 2wd after taking it out of four wheel drive. At first the dealer said it was due to the low temps outside and thick oil, but when it was still doing it in May I took it back to the dealer. They found an assembly error inside that kept the 4wd from completely disengaging and had to replace several parts. Luckily, it was still under warranty. When I got it back, it worked flawlessly and at 300 hrs it is still going strong. I hope yours is less of a problem, good luck.

I'm going to give you a few things to check. the first are relatively easy and if you are mechanically inclined I can take you further. Start by checkin and lubing the 4WD linkage. Make sure it doesn't bind in any way. Then go underneath the tractor and check the bolts attaching the front axil to the bottom of the tractor. Be sure they are tight and the axil doesn't slide back and forth on the bolts when turning the steering wheel. Next undo the drive shaft shield at the rear where the drive shaft comes out of the bottom of the transmission. Slide the shield forward exposing the drive shaft where it enters the transmission. Grab the drive shaft and try to wiggle it up and down to make sure the bearing at the transmission opening is tight. Put the shield back in place and make sure the shield is tight and not hitting the shaft in any place. Next gets a little more mechanical. Undo the 4WD linkage where it attaches to the shifting fork where it goes into the transmission. Drain the oil out of the transmission and remove the fork assy. Inspect the fork and if the sides of the fork are worn flat on the end replace it. I have the fork in stock
and it goes for $21.60 plus shipping to you. I believe the fork is probably your problem. While you have the fork out using a long screwdriver or pry bar reach into the transmission and slide the gear back and forth on the shaft to make sure it slides freely and pry up and down on the shaft to make sure the rear bearing on the shaft is tight. Hopefully all checks out good. The shifting fork I believe is probably the problem and not to hard to change and be sure to refill the transmission with fluid. If it is still under warranty, I wouldn't touch anything because you may void your warranty. Every dealer, I have found, takes warranty claims in a different manner.

On the other hand, if its out of warranty, do as others have sugguested on here.

Whatever it is, I'm sure it isn't too major of a problem.

Just my .02 cents worth.

Wow! :) Galen, you are Da Man! Wish you were my local dealer! Is this a common problem with the 4110 as the hours accumulate? Worth having the spare part in stock for someone 2 hours away from the nearest dealership? For that kind of short money, it sounds like maybe yes?

I have had only one customer that has had this problem, but I'm not the only dealer that has run into the problem. When you change the hytran fluid, it is so easy to pull out the fork when the fluid is out, that I would check it. If you want to keep one on hand it sure can't hurt.

I got my 4110 back today from the shop. The problem with the 4WD was the two bolts that are rear of the front axle came out and allowed the drive shaft to shift out of the coupling. It stripped the splines on the shaft and coupling. The only thing holding the front axle under the tractor was the front bolts and the shaft. The shaft was snug enough to make the front wheels turn without a load, but would not pull.The dealer installed the new shaft and coupling and replaced the bolts. The holes were threaded and this time he used longer bolts that extended through the holes and put locking nuts on the top side. The shaft and coupling cost me $100.00 plus labor. Not to bad since this is the only problem I have ever had with the tractor. So If you have a 4110 you might want to check the bolts under the front axle. I must say that I was impressed with the service and the part availiblity. It was only in the shop for less than a week.

Hi there

Using 4WD? Is it better to not use the 4WD if not needed; say cutting grass on level or just running around fields? Is it a good idea to use once in a while to oil things up? Is there an advantage to using 4WD always except on road in high range? Does it save on wear & tear by using 4WD as little as possible? Does not using 4WD save much fuel? I know these are dumb questions.... but just wondering.
