Planters $40 2-Row Corn Planter

   / $40 2-Row Corn Planter #21
Well most of the planter is together now. The pic is from before the seed cans were put on. Ava decided to climb in the fertilizer box and play.

So far it has a new fertilizer auger, the bushings and seals on the auger, bottom cover for the auger, new pully to drive the auger, a couple new chains, bolts, belt and other little parts. The lid is almost done as well. I still need to adjust the spacing on the planter and set it for 30" rows and to install the fertilizer boots and hook them up to the bin. One boot is broke and I need to replace/repair it still. A new one costs $21. So far I have just over $500 in this planter (thats including the $40 purchase price).

One of the problems I am still having is the bearings for the discs on the fertilizer boots are both seized up and cost $65 each for new ones. I need to remove one and see if I can find another place that might be able to find one identical for less money. If not its only money :(

I hooked it to my Ford 640 today to be able to lift it up to adjust the row spacing but tried it a little and everything worked like it was suppose to and is the first time it has been ran in quite a few years as a lot of parts were seized up when I bought it. Once its done and the corn is planted for the year by everyone I will look into painting it up since Ava has already gave me the orders to make it look line the one new shiny part that had paint on it:laughing:

An old 2-row planter with dry fertilizer attachment is tough to beat for sweetcorn, and deer foodplots. I have used a JD 246, for which I paid $120,for the last 20 years or so. Over the years,I replaced the shoes and fabricated a couple of other parts but it has been relatively trouble free all that time. I hope to use it within a couple weeks this year to get in my first planting of sweetcorn (no use putting it in now with nightime lows in the 40's), then again near the end of the month for another planting of sweetcorn and around 10 acres of fieldcorn for the deer. As the hunters are really starting to catch on about the effectiveness of standing corn for deer, those old 2-rows are getting tough to find and very valuable when you do find them. 4-rows can still be found relatively cheap but there is little demand for them being too small for "real" farming and too big for foodplotting and gardening. My 246 was set up at 36" rows, is that where your Ferguson was? I like the 36" rows because they work nice for bowhunting.

This planter was shipped from the factory at 40" spacing but currently the one side is set in the 38" slot and the other the 30" slot. I don't know why it was set like that but doesn't matter now.

I am going to set it at 30" rows so that it will pull behind most compact tractors without planting into the wheel tracks. I would prefer 36" rows as well but that row spacing makes it hard for most people to straddle two rows for spraying.
