Today, the first bags of fertilizer were spread on the yard. Working with the 3ph spreader reminded me how awkward an implement it is to mount and remove from the tractor, and not easy to store or move around.

When I got my spreader a few years ago, I built a wheelbarrow kind of holder to wheel it around and hold the spreader steady for mounting on the tractor. My contraption is pictured.

A wooden lip keeps the bottom of the spreader from slipping forward.

Up top, a little notched piece of wood swivels to secure the top of the spreader for moving or release it for mounting on the tractor.

This is a shot of the wheelbarrow part. Small wheels in front. Posts behind. Then handles for lifting and moving around.

One last shot of the front part of my "spreader holder".

There have been a few posts lately about folks interested in buying a spreader. Mine is used only a few times a year, but has saved me from ever going back to a push-by-hand spreader. I cringe to think about it.

Anyway, these pictures are just to show one way of dealing with moving and storing a very useful, but awkward implement.

Nice looking setup. Spreaders are top heavy and can be hard to hook up sometimes. What I did for mine was use two pallets with a piece of plywood on top of the second pallet, I set the spreader on top and secured it with bungy cords. This works slick for me and keeps the spreader off the ground.

Re: 3ph Spreader--Storage Dolly

Some implements are tougher than others to store and easily move around. A spreader is definitely one of the tough ones. Another (for me) is my posthole digger. Mine still sits in the dirt for storage...not good. I'm still trying to devise a method that works for me on that one.

The eBay stand is simple and compact. I like that. You've got me thinking now. My poor posthole digger deserves better than laying in the dirt. Thanks for the link!

Re: 3ph Spreader--Storage Dolly

BrettW,
Sorry I haven't quite got around to going digitial yet, maybe soon. My setup is easy to setup though: two or three pallets depending on how high you need it to be, one on top of another with top one having a piece of plywood screwed down to it. I set the spreader on top of it and run some bungys from the top of the spreader down to the plywood. I also screwed some 1x2 wood strips down to the plywood around the base of the spreader to kind of hold it in place. It's cheap & quick to build and keeps the metal parts off the ground.

Nice setup.. my spreader is very similar to yours.. I should rip off your design and build one /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
if'n your gonna patent it you better hurry.. I'm gettin tired of dragging my spreader outa the shed and manhandling it on.

thanks
