I was looking at spreaders but I'm leaning towards a sprayer now for my weed killing and fertilizer duties. Anyone have any recommendations for a 3PH sprayer that runs off 12volt?

I bought a FIMCO lg-55-3pt for my JD 4200. I haven't tried it out yet as I'm finishing up the quick-hitch adapter I'm making for the sprayer.

:: FIMCO Industries :: Manufacturers of Lawn and Garden Sprayers and Agricultural Equipment

Another brand is P-K. P-K Manufacturing Corporation - A Division Of Schropp Industries, Inc. - Index

Their 3-PT sprayers don't appear to be quick-hitch compatible either.

FIMCO seems to offer more for the money than P-K does. My sprayer arrived with a cracked plastic valve body, and FIMCO replaced it without charge and got the part to me quickly. Another plus for FIMCO is that when you call their 1-800 number a real person answers the phone and you don't have to "Press 1 for English!"

I bought mine from Gemplers GEMPLER'S - Official Site - Your Source for Outdoor Work Supplies and they were the lowest cost even with freight than any of the local dealers. Gemplers also answers the phone with a real person and like FIMCO, you do not have to "Press 1..."

I hope this helps you with your sprayer hunting.

I chose to buy an ATV sprayer and mount it to a carry-all. I got the Fimco ATV-25-71 from TSC.

Tractor Supply Company - DELUXE ATV SPRAYER

It's a 25 gal tank, which mean I'll probably have to use two tanks full for the two acres I'll be spraying. The kit comes with everything though - including the pump. The boom is very nice. Everything, with the exception of the directions, is very high quality. It's designed to go on the rear rack of an ATV, but with very minor mods it went right onto my carry-all.

Fimco makes a 60gal 3-point hitch model, but it's $650 and that doesn't include the PTO pump. I think the electric model is all I need.

Matt,

I have a carry-all that fits the 3ph and is useful for so many things. Rather than getting a sprayer with a frame and wheels or 3ph frame, I just got one designed to bungee on the back of an ATV and bungee it to the carry-all. Mine is 15 gal & was $89 on sale at Northern Tool, though you could put a bigger one there. This was a lot cheaper, and since the tank and motor without frame are so light, I can store it up in the garage trusses or on top of a shelf unit, etc. out of the way; one on wheels would take up floor space. Carry-all was only about $100, so the total expenditure was no more than a sprayer on wheels and the versatility is much greater this way.

According the local farm store, you need about 40 gallon per acre with most of the fertilizers and weed products. With the 25 gallon and th 15 gallon how many times are you filling up for your lots?

Last year I borrowed a buddy's "Weed Wagon" as we call it. The wagon consists of a nursery style wagon that can be pulled by hand or hitched to a lawn & garden tractor or ATV. A 15 gallon Fimco ATV spot sprayer was installed by my buddy, plus a battery to power the pump. To spray total vegetation killer (e.g. Roundup, Ortho Triox, etc) in the ditch out front (90'+/- x 25'+/-), the perimeter of our 2,700"+/- square foot house and garage out to about 5' to 7' from the foundation, spot spray the driveway and other locations in the yard, and approximately 500'+/- square feet of rock for a corral the HOASS forced me to install to hide my tractor's implements took about 50-gallons of weed killer.

Though I have yet to use the Fimco 55-gallon sprayer, I chose the PTO sprayer for the relatively large tank capacity, 12' of boom, and a handheld spot spraying gun.

I'd like the PTO sprayer also, but I'm not seen a single 55 gallon unit that is PTO driven. They all seem to be electric pump.

The FIMCO I have uses a 6-roller pump, which is sold separately...GRRRR. Still Gempler's had the best price on the sprayer and pump, and the shipping from FIMCO was prompt. Gempler's is a middle man dealer for FIMCO.

The P-K 55-gallon unit is PTO roller pump driven too, and you have to buy the pump separately too.

Matt,

I don't do wide area broadcast spraying, only spot spraying with my 15 gal.: Roundup on weeds along the driveway, Weed-B-Gone on patches of clover that get too dense in the lawn. A tank will last me an hour and cover 10,000 ft2., about a quarter acre which matches the stats you cited.

I sprayed Crossbow yesterday. My sprayer is 25 gal with a 10' breakaway boom with 140" total coverage and a handheld sprayer wand. At 25psi I got just over an acre, so I filled it a second time and sprayed a total of 2.5 acres. It worked great and took me about 10 minutes to do the refill. My farm store gave me the same #'s as yours. I went for the 25 gal knowing that I would have to refill it, but liked the ease of the electric hookup - which works like a champ!

This probably belongs in the Build it Yourself section, apologies up front.
You can build your own "custom" sprayer, pretty easily.

I built a 55 gal 3 Pt. sprayer using a plastic CarWash Barrel. Mounted vertically on an "L" shaped 3 Pt. frame. 50 gals of H2o at 8 lbs per gallon = 400 lbs. Can also be used as a Ballast box.

The Barrel is conveniently marked for every 5 gallons down the side.

Used a 12 volt ShurFlo RV water pump, wired a removeable plug-in cord, with On/Off that can be switched from driver seat. You can spray a straight row, switch it OFF, turn around, then back ON for the next pass.

Got the boom portions from Northern Hydraulics (now Northern Tools?)
Sprayer Boom Kits | Sprayers | Grounds Maintenance | Northern Tool + Equipment
Booms folds up for storage. I hooked it up so that each boom (left and right) have their own ball valve...so...you can run only one side, if needed, leaving the other folded in the upright position if in a tight spot.
I had a strip along my driveway that only needed one side spraying.

Mounted the RV Pump into the top of the drum using SS screws, placed a pvc dip tube down to near bottom. installed a small screen filter up top, at input to 12v RV pump. Use the existing bung for filling.
Drilled and tapped a drain plug at bottom for rinsing.

Later I plumbed another ball valve on the output side, and installed a spot sprayer nozzle on a 20 foot piece of garden hose.

Works like a champ. Saved $$ building it, no regrets.

Scrounger,

I've been using a RANKIN 55 gallon 3 point sprayer on my JD4310. It has a PTO pump, 10 ft boom and a hand held spray gun. The tank has an adjustable pressure valve to vary the application amount (More pressure = heavier application). This allows you to keep a steady PTO speed.

Works great on my 8 acres of horse pasture. It took three tanks to put down Weedmaster on the pastures this spring.

RANKIN is based in Yakima, WA.

I just bought a fimco 40 gal sprayer and I think it is a piece of junk. the thing leaks every where, the gauge filled up with water first thing, I could sweat out more liquid than it will spray. Maybe I got a lemon but it was the second 2 1/2 hr ride to get it and that doesn't help to impress me either. They advertise it to be made in the USA but the pump says china! I know I'm rantin & raving cause I just came in from messing with it so I'm still a little warm.

Fabro brings out a good point about products primarily made in the USA being brought down to junk status by one or more components made of Chinese garbage.

/ 3PH Sprayer for Kubota BX #16
I forgot to suggest to Fabro and anyone else for that matter; when you get a piece of Chinese et al made junk that fails prematurely or doesn't work...gripe to the manufacturer if at all possible.

Obviously the chances that it will do any good are slim; but if enough people grouse, then it might make a difference.

I know I gripe whenever possible. APC got a nasty little gripe over a UPS made in India that died 6-months after the warranty expired. Of course I got the standard corporate response of we're sorry for your inconvenience and we appreciate you taking the time to share your concerns and opinions...blah...blah...blah.

Here is the sprayer I put together. It was originally a 25 gallon spot sprayer for the back of an atv. I built the carrier and boom. I should have bought the one with the boom included, I ended up spending more money on it. The chemical I use,Trimec or Tramec or something like that, it is 2-4-D based. They recommend from 25 gallons of "mix" per acre up to 150 or something pretty large like that, one tank per acre is on the very low end so I try to run two tanks per acre.

Actually I had a fuzzy feeling when I was in the TSC yard and the young lady helping me, pealed off about a foot of paint from a brace on an $1,200 fimco manure spreader. Are we all sure these products are made in the good old USA?
Ill bet if that girl wasn't so cute I wouldn't have bought that sprayer. See they smile at me and I just say I do, I will, Ok. I'm sueing for entrappment.

My new Maytag refrigerator says "Assembled in USA." That's a far cry from "Made in USA." who knows where the components for my refrigerator were actually made in; but I'll bet China, Indonesia, and Mexico are the top three contenders. I can only hope the new refrigerator has legendary Maytag reliability like my Mom's ringer washer had (30 years service), my Mom's current washer-dryer (26 years and still going strong) and my washer-dryer (16 years and still going strong).

I have nothing against imports if they are equal to or of greater quality than American made products; but this sick trend of making everything in China and elsewhere because of the slave labor wages they pay their workers, the poor quality of the products, and the falsification of material properties and quality that is rampant over there just torques me off no end.

I could go on; but I'll just get all fired up and no place to vent. :D
