3M Headlight Restoration Kit

i found a uv coating and lense polish at the local auto store. i applied it to my lamps after lettingthem dry.. goes in in 2 coats and cures decently fast... adds a nice seal to the lamp they you just ground on.

spray on, wipe off.. re apply about every 2m or so.. generally lasts thru at least 1 good washing.

least that's how it's holding on my vehicles.

good combination with the restoration polish job.

i guess if I knew how to shoot clear coat.. i might try that too.. :)

It never ceases to amaze me what one finds on TBN.... excellent write-up, EagleTDL. Soundguy, I'll have to check out your thread as well!

So far my Jetta's lenses are holding up well, but I figure it's only a matter of time. Nice to see those lens restoration products actually work!

The way to fix your foggy or faded headlights once and for all is to wet sand them with 800 and then spray two coats of automotive clear coat on them. I use SPI clearcoat for all my projects and restorations.

The reason your headlights look the way they do is because the UV light has gotten to the plastic. Buffing will not add UV protection, but clearcoat will. Any other method of headlight "restoration" will need to be repeated about once per year, due to UV deteroration.

Excellent point!! Does this kit have a UV protectant? I got my Jeep headlights crystal clear again and within 6 months they were back to dingy yellow.

My son is finishing up his auto body program and they use painters plastic to cover the front of the car and then cut out and tape around the headlights, wet sand them with 2,000 grit, compound them then follow up with swirl mark remover then 2 coats of Teflon based wax. I was surprised at the results.

That's what I've done with very good reults....Might try the 3M on the new to me 97 Ford MH...Headlights are just starting to yellow. Not too bad yet.

When I get it out of the mine, I'll give it a try.

if just starting to yellow, try just the rubbing compound, forget the higher grit steps.

I polished a buddies lenses that were just starting to have, usuing jus tthe buff compound and worked great.. then once cleaned up we added the uv protectant spray. made it even better.

uv spray came from autozone.. was about 9$.. though thay had a couple different brands from 5$ or so and up
