Check the connection where it goes into the tack housing in the front of the engine by the injector pump.
If it is tight and still doing it then take the end loose and spin the cable with your fingers and see if the tach on the dash moves.
I finally checked it out.(after tach needle snapped off). Took cable off at engine location. Cable spins fine and needle moves(whats left of it). Put a couple drops of oil in engine part and put it back on. Seems to be working OK.
