Hi gentlmen, I'm new to you forum. I'm a farmer and a firewood cutter and have been refered to your forum many times on different searches so I thought I would join.

I looked at some very old posts on this site about guys who have built their own skidder. I'm a good welder but my better judgement is telling me to buy a commercially built one but my checkbook is telling me to research the cost of building one.

My question is this- Can I use my little JD 5320 hydraulic system to power a 12000 pd hydraulic winch? Tractor I think puts out 22 GPM at 2000PSI. Does this take "power beyond" or what position does my hydraulic system need to be in. Can damage be done to either unit (tractor or winch) if the oil supply is constant to winch? I'm just not sure what I'm getting into here. The clutch system on the commercial ones sure seems like a good Idea. Any advice would be appreciated.

Well this might be a better question for the Hydraulics forum, but I will take a run at it. You will most likley need an additional control valve added onto a PB circuit to control the winch, unless you already have controlled rear remotes. If you have installed rear remotes, I think it would just be a matter of 2QC's and the hoses to the winch motor. After that, the winch would be controlled by the valve that controlls those remote ports. A little more information about your specific setup and perhaps some side and rear pics of your machine would help give us the information we need to give you a more specific answer.

The tractor is just a 5320 JD. The machine isn't built yet. I appreciate the info.

I built a similar set up a few ago. I used a 10,500 lb mile marker hyd winch and the remote on my Kubota tractor. That was about 4 years ago and I am still using it. Some place on here there is a pic of it. I think its under build it yourself.

Are you happy with it? Would you build another one or buy one if you had to do it again?

I would build another one because it will pull more than the ones that you buy.
