3-Point Hitch 3-Point Question

   / 3-Point Question #11
Just for the record our old 1954 Massey Harris Pacer has both up and down force on the hydraulics. That feature was used for a wide variety of things but only rarely to force an implement downward. The worst of it was those tractors had no 3 pt hitch.

I'm confused. What was the down force on if your Massey didn't have 3pt hitch?

It's possible to put down-force on a PHD by putting a brace between the ROPS and the boom and using the FEL to lift the front of the tractor. It seems like something from the Red Green show on Canadian TV, but works in some situations like getting started in hard pan. There's a risk of wrecking something so all the usual cautions, warnings, etc. apply.

!! WARNING !! NEVER USE YOUR ROPS FOR THIS!

You should never use your ROPS in this way. You should also never drill through, weld on, grind, or make any sort of changes to or with your ROPS.

- You can safely use your ROPS to CLAMP things onto such as a small toolbox, lights, & other smaller accessories.

The double acting hydraulic cylinder would force a cast iron lever on a shaft either clockwise or counterclockwise. Depending on what you had connected to it, it would provide force either direction. Over the years examples included downward force on a disk harrow, upward cable connected pull or lift on a "buck rake" used to move loose hay and hay shocks, downward force on a potato plow that kept it engaged in the soil independent of gravity, etc. The biggest pain was the lack of a "standardized" 3pt hitch and thus no compatibility with a wide variety of implements. That did not mean there was no hitch for various implements. BY THE WAY this tractor was made in Canada and still runs really well today at age 62.

Belarus is the only 3pt hitch tractor I can think of that has down pressure.

IH tractors with 2 pt hitch (and thus 3pt adaptor) had down pressure as well.

Some skip loader tractors have down pressure. My JCB for example has an external double acting cylinder that controls the 3 point. It's really nice for some situations.

Mr. Roadhunter: I think it is a profound change in the Ag equipment market -- to see skid-steer technology spread over into Ag equipment. Amazes me how long it takes ! Putting skid-steer compatible plates on the front of front-end loader frames was so obvious it is just crazy. But look how long it took. Kubota quietly transitioned over to standardizing on the interface for the FEL buckets starting around 10 years ago. Other brands have been head scratchers in still not standardizing on the skid-steer interface for the FEL buckets. The main underpinning of value to farmers and the AG industry is MASS MARKET. There have to be 50 times as many implements sold nation-wide for skid-steers than for AG tractors. That means so many things in terms of driving prices down. It also means hundreds of implements potentially useful on your tractor compared to the teens of implements otherwise. I had not heard of the JCB up/down force feature for their 3pt hitches. But it doesn't surprise me. I'm guessing there are many, many other features and devices in use on skid-steers with no good excuse for failure to make them available for farm tractors too. THE SECRET is standardization of the connections. The interface. Skid-steer compatibility is second only to the 3pt hitch in AG tractor evolutionary milestones.

I think old timers who have been making the decisions tend to be of the line of thinking that tractors are meant to pull and skid steers are meant to push and lift.

Thanks for the good information. the issue was the worn cutting surface on the auger. The auger teeth were shot as most of you thought.
So much for rented equipment!
