John Deere 1050
I have two questions that I could use some help on.

First, I have a John Deere 1050 that has a backhoe and FEL. Recently I took the backhoe off, for the first time, to put on a brush hog. The problem is that I cannot get the 3-point hitch to raise or lower. I have looked through the manual and I think I am doing everything correct. Hoses from the backhoe, when it was removed, have been connected together. Hydraulic stop valve is open. I have tried raising the hitch with the draft sensing lever in "Position Control" and "Draft Control". I have adjusted the "speed of drop lever". The FEL works fine and the backhoe worked fine.

Second question. How much weight could my FEL lift. I don't have any paper work on it and have looked through the tractor manual and can't find anything. I am looking at getting some large precast retaining wall blocks that would be set using my tractor.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. I am definetly a tractor rookie so go easy on me.

I'm no expert but here is the only thing I can think of.

Can you lift the three point arms manually? If you can't then I suspect your speed of drop valve is closed or plugged. If that was closed or plugged the 3pt hitch wouldn't move. If this was the case you'd hear hydraulic whine (from the overload valve) if you tried to raise it.

I think the 1050 loader rating is around 1050lbs, with a 5' bucket. Maybe 1200lbs- tops

Dumb comment on my part- did you try the rockshaft lever on the right hand side of the seat? Black handle-maybe? Is there fluid in the tranny/rear end?

Pictures always help us understand better.

Draft lever down and then try the position control lever.

Being able to lift the lift arms by hand doesn't have anything to do with the drop valve. They will lift / float up even if the valve is closed or stuck. If you can't lift it up it could be that the rockshaft is stuck, the piston is broke or the piston rod (dog bone) is broke or has come out.

Hey Guys,

Yes, I have tried the rockshaft lever and yes I can lift it manually.
If it is stuck as you say JerryG, does that mean I wouldn't be able to lift it manually? I'm going to go over it one more time this weekend and see if I'm missing something. If that doesn't work, the old girls headed for the shop. Thanks Guys.

I am guessing that it has to do with the way the backhoe hoses are re-connected. Most of the tiem when the backhoe is attached it disables the 3pt. You might call a JD dealer service dept and ask, I am sure they will fix you right up. Good luck and let us know how its going

Good point. Check the BH hoses. If it's like my 3320 you want to connect the hose from the tractor to the female connector directly above or below it. The Female connector is just a drain and that's not the one you want to connect to.

Hey LLoyd,

There were two hoses that came off the backhoe. One male end and one female end. I just connected them to each other. It did not look like there was anyplace else for them to go and the length of each hose seemed to indicate that they just hook to each other. I will check things out tonight.

Generally speaking you should now hook up the Male outlet on the tractor to the female outlet on the tractor to complete the hydraulic circuit. On my BH, the Tractor has a female fitting fixed, and a male fitting on the hose from the tractor. If I didn't do this I don't think any of my hydraulics would work.

I am guessing that there is another QD(Quick Disconnect) on the rear of of the tractor. The QD that's connected now is probably a direct return to the tank, thereby disabling the 3PH for safety reasons while the backhoe is on. There should be another line that feeds the 3PH.

Can you post a picture of the rear of your machine?
