I used a small pry bar and carefully got it to move then it came right off.

Thanks. I 'll try it. Of course I 'll be careful of the rule " if it ain 't broke, fix it until it is ". :D

same problem on my l3400 when delivered new. I put penetrating oil on it and let it soak a few minutes. then took a set of channel locks with a rag, and started to move it back and forth just a fraction at a time.. it soon loosened up and works ok now. put some spray white lithium grease on the shaft and kind of rubbed it in with my finger to hopefully keep it from doing it again. It is not something I adjust very often, but it was way fast when I got the tractor. Good luck

Yep, I been lettin' it soak all day ( if I managed to hit the sweet spot blind ). Gonna give it another shot tomorrow. Too many mosquitoes out right now.

I have wondered about the mechanics of that knob. I thought it operates a valve and that is how the lowering speed is accomplished. Is that right? If so, what would cause the valve to jam up?

That 's my understanding. As far as jamming I think junk in threads of shaft if there are threads, light rust, failure to exercise it once in a while. If I get it freed, I will give it a couple of turns from time to time to keep it clear and operational. Gonna give the unjamming another try today with some gentle coaxing via a wrench.

Ok. Problem is solved, but leaving with me a new slight worry problem.

For others that have had the porblem here 's what I did. Sprayed wd40 blindly best I could on shaft base. Let sit over night. Grapped knobed and gave it a slight giggle left, right, up, and down. Freed to turn.
Now the worry. If I grab the shaft/knob I can wobble it slightly like it is loose in the hole. I don 't remember if it was that way when I got it. I would appreciated if some one with a similar knob could let me know if they have the slight wobble. I 'm gonna start it up and check to see if I get any hydro leaks. None right now, but machine has not been run.

So, instead of cursing at it, laugh at it?
Who knew!

In my younger years I wouldn 't believe I actually typed that, but now I 'm old and wise and realize I have senior moments. Ya know a giggle or two might have helped me while I was worrying about the problem

I had the same problem on my B7800. Used the same process you used, except I removed the metal shroud that covered where it went into the rear end in order to gain better access. I used vise grips to grasp it and get it moving.

Yes, mine has a little wobble in it. That has never presented a problem (leaks).

I "exercise" it regularly. As a matter of fact, you post has reminded me and I am going to do it now.
