1) is this a 101 Ford plow?

2) the left and right plow have some sort of angle iron support that the middle does not. Is this factory, or some sort of customization?

3) on the right front portion of the plow near where the lift arm attaches, there is an "ear" with 3 holes into which a j bolt attaches. This appears to be some sort of adjustment for the 3 pt attachment. I've noticed some Ford 101,s with a long hand lever in this location. What is this adjustment used for?

4) does the tail wheel look factory? Does it appear to be properly attached?

5) does this appear to be a 12" or 14"? How exactly do you get that measurement? Which is more desirable and why ?

Any and all information you can share with me about this particular plow and Ford 3 bottom 101's is greatly appreciated. Thanks

1- Yes
2- I'm not sure about the added angle iron supports. They look like they were customized, but could have been an attachment point for an added option.
3-The ear and j-bolt adjust the 3-pt pins, which will swing the rear of the plow left or right to get proper width of cut. The long handled version is just an easier, quick adjust option.
4- Tail wheel looks factory and correct to me.
5- Measure from top beam to top beam (center to center) to get the width.
Send me a private message with your email address and I'll email you a PDF copy of the owners manual for the 101 plows.

I sent your manual.
I noticed the plow has coulters and cover boards. Both are getting harder to find on these older plows. Very nice!
Also, you can disassemble and reassemble this as a 2 bottom plow if you only need the smaller size. I did that to one, and it worked well since it was missing a coulter anyway. Works great as a 2 bottom for me.

Here is my version of that plow I restored.

I have the ford 3 bottom that trips , not sure of the model number . I never thought about making it into a 2 bottom , might be a good idea as my garden keeps getting smaller .

Ford850 has it pegged. His manual will explain all of the adjustment particulars.

That plow is in excellent shape and all parts seem to be there. The shins and shares look little-used. If I needed one I'd go as high as $600...maybe more.

It looks to be an auto-trip/reset model. There is a hole for greasing the trip mechanism near the top front of the mount. I recommend taking it all apart, cleaning, and regreasing.

Measure the bottom of the share (the part that touches the ground) to determine if it is 12" or 14". Neither is more desirable. Rather, it is what your tractor can pull through the ground you are dealing with.

Looks really nice. It's a great plow. Just FYI, when I restored mine , I replaced the mold boards , shares, shins, and landsides , and the rolling landside. I found parts fairly easily except for the landsides. They were a bear to find. But from what I can see this one you posted looks great, so I doubt it needs much. Mine is a shear pin model. Just make sure your trip mechanism works. It would be a shame to damage it when you hit a rock. I break shear pins fairly often.

Have you purchased this? What will you pull it with? I have a 70 horse kubota.

I am trying to purchase it. Shipping from Illinois to Texas may kill the deal. I have a Ford 7710 FWA and a New Holland TB 110 FWA I'm planning to use to pull this plow. Any suggestions on the shipping?

Was that for my benefit ?

Obviously, no. It was to provide more information for those members on TBN to read the poster's description and give you more impetus to go after it if the shipping is reasonable. Knowing the asking price that detail is essential for determining value. There are other similar plows going for around $1500. That is too much IMO.

Plus, it is an "Or Best Offer" listing. Maybe you can make an offer that will offset some of the shipping. This additional information fills in some of the holes.

It was easy enough to find from your description but other members may not have taken the time to search for it. My post was a service to the members and ultimately for you through their opinions.

gwdixon, my apologies. Sometimes written text and non face to face communication do not portray intentions. Thank you for your interest in helping me.

Actually, I apologize back to you. There is no way that I want to upset or annoy another member.

After your reply, I thought "Well, maybe he thinks I am undercutting his purchase or sticking my nose where it doesn't belong."

The offending post has been deleted.

Still, hope you find a way to get it. It is a good deal for the plow's condition IMO. It might even be worth a "mini-vacation" to go pick it up.

As much as I would like to buy this plow, it looks like freight is going to make it not practical. I would like to do as some have mentioned and take a little road trip, but the time is just not there.

In looking at a few local Ford 101 plows (none as nice as the one I pictured) I found that there is a shear pin version and a spring trip / re-setting version. Is one of these options more desirable? Which one, and why?

Also, is the long handled left/right adjustment version really that much more desirable than the adjustable bolt version?

Spring trip is nice if you have alot of buried stuff that will trip the plows like rocks and roots. If your working established ground its generally not an issue. I had a big rock trip a bottom last spring, but I've plowed that same ground five times before without a trip. The spring trip allows you to reset the plow without getting off the tractor, but either way I stop and backup to reset the plow, and check to see if its something small enough to dig out.

If you are plowing with the same tractor all the time you will only have to adjust the plow to get it tracking straight the first time. After that you shouldn't need to adjust it again until you get a new tractor:D

Mine is the shear pin model. I plow pretty poor soil in remote areas for food plots. I shear pins frequently, maybe 1 or 2 over the course of a day. But it's really no big deal. Takes about a minute to change. I keep a hammer and punch handy, tap out the broken remains and slide in a new one. I use grade 8 bolts from tractor supply, about 2.5" long and 5/16 " diameter but this is from memory. So they are cheap. I don't even bother to use a nut. Also I've learned to drive with my hand on the 3 point lift and foot near the clutch. You can almost feel it happening and a quick reaction can prevent a shear. To me this is simpler than the mechanics and maintenance of the spring type, but that's from one who has never used that type.

Wish you were closer, as I would sell you mine. Since I now No-till, I never use it. ,.

HC, I was looking at the pics of the plow you restored. Very Nice! From what I can see, it looks like you have yours set up for Cat II. I was planning to do the same. Looks like you replaced the pin on the plows rt side and put a bushing on the left side. Can you confirm this. Also, did you have to do any machining on that left side before using the bushing?

Thank you. Yes that is correct. I pull it with a 70 horse Kubota and I do use the bushings, and I did replace the right side pin. Can't remember for sure but I may have needed to cut the left bushing a little shorter in order to be able to place the retaining pin but it's been a few years ago and I may be wrong. Either way, it's no big deal . This plow works great. Hope you find one. I wouldn't worry about it if you see one w/o coulters as mine works fine as is. Perhaps coulters help make the cut neat and tidy, but for my use, they don't seem necessary. Good luck.
