I'll take gears too.
If you're doing light duty (as it relates to the transmission) stuff like mowing, bushhogging, even loader work, the Hydrostatic is just dandy.
But if you're doing a lot of heavy pulling, really putting the horsepower to the ground for extended periods of time, like plowing, tillage work, even skidding logs (at least where I'm at... lots of steep hills to climb) you do NOT want a hydrostatic. They get HOT... and they don't like to get hot. Gears are what you want when you have to pull stuff.
Give me gears.

The simple solution to both the gear/HST and the 2WD/4WD argument is that we should each have one of each. A gear tractor for when gears work best; an HST for when that's the answer. A 4WD for when we might get stuck; a 2WD for that high & dry hayfield. Debating this over and over accomplishes nothing. Instead, let's put the same effort and thought into obtaining MORE TRACTORS!

That's a ringer voltage issue and different switchboard / switching technology issue.. not because the old phones becamesuddenly obsolete when someone came up with a new idea. You can't compair a change in a utility infrastructure that mandatorilly changes out older different pattern hardware with newer compatible hardware to a trans that is equally viable depending on the application.

I agree. However having a couple of extra wheels to work with greatly helps in getting out (along with an FEL to lift the front wheels to get something under them). Don't ask me how I know this. Given a choice - I would still go 4WD (although I tend to keep it in 2WD until I need the extra traction).
