Is there a separate voltage regulator? Or is it built into the alternator? This reminds me of a problem I had on my previous Harley. Voltage regulator went bad, electric tach suddenly went haywire and battery ended up ruined as well... although it was never actually determined which died first: voltage regulator or battery. :confused:

If it is the alternator, I had the alternator on my marine diesel engine rewired/rebuilt. It was dirt cheap at the time (compared to a brand new one) and came out far better than brand new. I kid you not. If it does need rebuilding, I would find someone with a good reputation who specializes in rebuilding marine starters and alternators.

Bad news! I called the local dealer, a new alternator is $480.00:( !
I called around looking for a place that rebuilds them and found one right in our little town. He left me a message, He can only get bearings and brushes and that is not the problem. Dealer only item. The local dealer tells me it is at least a week to get. I don't get the feeling that they are really up to par with Mahindra yet, just a feeling but, still.

I don't know where you live in the land of "Live Free or Die", but I still think you can find someone to do this rebuild for you and do it right... perhaps not in your home town, but I know you can find someone! And it will cost a lot less than $480.00 (although that is dirt cheap by marine standards). I still say look along your seacoast for marine starter/alternator rebuilders. They are the ones... not the automotive types... that can work wonders with the most obscure alternators ever made! :)

Also consider this: Your 2810HST should be a TYM product. You may want to take that alternator to a TYM tractor dealer (or call them) and see if they are any cheaper (I am assuming here that you are out of warranty). You may also be able to match it up to the Korean OE manufacturer product and find a supplier on-line. That could be cheaper yet. We used to have to do that all the time with my marine engine... unless we wanted to pay the 3X marine markup. Not as bad for tractors, but not cheap either. :rolleyes:

If all that fails, me being dirt poor and cheap, I would try matching it up to a new or rebuilt generic. Might be easy or it might not depending on any self-contained VR or other electronics. Obviously, this might take some time, particularly if you need to fab a new bracket.

Nope... Korean TYM-made with a Daedong Engine:

But you raise a very good point: The engine is by Daedong... so you shouldn't call a TYM dealer for an alternate price on an alternator. You should try a Kioti dealer instead! :)

Note that I believe this is the same Daedong made or specified 50-Amp alternator as on the 3510 and 4110 as well.

I spoke with the guy that I hoped would rebuild it, he stated he checked with his suppliers and found out it was, as he referred to it, a captive item - dealer only. He stated he could get bearings and brushes, but not the regulator. I don't think he got too far into it, knowing he couldn't get parts for it. I think it may be feasible to swap to another type but, I want to make sure the tach works, and works correctly. After seeing all the electrics inside the dash, I'm inclined to go OEM rather than risk any other issues. I spoke to another dealer who confirmed the limited availabilty of the unit. I don't think Kioti used this engine in a US tractor. I do think LG/LS did or still does but, I don't have any local dealers and can't imagine cost being too different.

This sounds like he was looking to swap it for a rebuilt... common practice these days for starter/alternator folks who can no longer afford or be bothered to do a simple rewind job. :rolleyes: I sympathize with you for not having a caring, traditional rebuilder nearby, but I am not surprised. :eek: Good luck to you whatever you decide to do! :)

Why can't the rebuilder diagnose which component is at fault? - very simple if he's a pro. Then why can't either you or he order the component that's crapped from your Mahindra dealer? If the armature checks out OK, it's got to be either the regulator or rectifier, or possibly a bad connection. Like Doug says, a true rebuilder could fix you up easily.

I'm not completely sure exactly what he had done, still not back from work. I'll hopfully pick it up tonight. I haven't called Mahindra to see if they stock the individual components of the alternator but, I wouldn't think so. There is another, larger shop 20 miles away, I may take it there if time allows.

I certainly would! :) Even if you do end up buying a brand new one for expediancy... I'd still get that old one fixed... even if it meant shipping it to a rebuilder... and either keep it as a spare or sell it on eBay! :)

Or, if you don't want the "dud", I'll be happy to buy it! :D
