240 or 120 Volt?

   / 240 or 120 Volt? #61
I wish this was true. If it was, everything in my home would be 220v.

You are correct.

Your induction electric meter measures wattage and bills accordingly. wattage is volts x amps so 240 is haf the cost of 110 in a given situation.

Better yet, get 408-440 3 phase.

You are wrong. He said they are the SAME wattage. And you said (and we all know) power company bills by wattage.

So in his case, the cost is the same, but it is half the amperage:thumbsup:

No.

The power company sells energy (measured in watt-hours, or more conveniently, killowatt hours). How that energy is delivered to the load (for example, your electric heater) in terms of more amps/fewer volts or fewer amps/more volts is of no bearing.

Higher voltages do reduce operating current, which saves copper via reduction of wire size, and also reduces I-squared-R heating loss. For this reason the power company generation and distribution networks operate at very high voltages, ranging from as high as 230KV down to about 3KV. These high voltages are stepped down at your pole transformer into a related pair of voltages (120Vac and 240Vac) which provide service to your home.

Nevertheless, whether you use 120Vac or 240Vac to power an appliance in your home, the net amount of energy consumption is the same and your electric bill, accordingly, will be the same.
