John Deere 2305
I just bought a 2305 and was wondering if the fuel consumption will get better after breaking in tractor over time? I am new to diesels!

I think they do a little better after they are broke in. It's hard for me to tell. I bought my diesel when we moved here two years ago. We have an 8 acre yard. I use a lot less fuel mowing the same yard now than two years ago. But then it takes me less time to mow it since I have become more familiar with the yard and the tractor.

Probably because it has a small tank and one has to fill it constantly.

How hard are you working it? Fuel consumption can increase drastically with work load. Mowing heavy grass or especially rototilling will use double the fuel. How much fuel are you actually adding each fill? The tank holds about 6 gallons but the fuel guage is a little funny, I can be half empty before the needle starts to go down and it goes down fast. I never actually checked but my 2210 is somewhere in the 1/2 to 3/4 gallon/hour range with a light load, but something like 1.5 gallon an hour rototilling.

You don't have to do everything at the 540 rpm mark. I've found as you increase the rpms above 2200, the fuel consumption increases exponentially. I mow between 2200 and 2500 rpm and it sips fuel.

I burn 20 litres in 15 hours or so when using the backhoe and loader.

I bought brand-new 65 hours ago and have beat the living bejeesus out of her clearing land. Stumping and materials handling. She is a sweet machine. I run at 2500 rpm, still below the Hot Line and am so impressed with the hydro static transmission.

So are the truck drivers delivering gravel and having it GONE in twenty minutes (12 yard truck).

The fuel consumption is AS EXPECTED. It does a lot of work for its cost and I wouldn't ever look back at owning it. I have worked with Fords all my life and I am so happy I went in this direction!

All the best, John

As another poster said, what makes you think your using a lot of fuel? and how much have you been adding per fill up?

My BX23 has a 2.5 gallon tank.
Don't seem like I have to fill it constantly.

Well when you spread the work out over 3 tractors than of course you won't be filling it constantly.

I have found for my 2305 with 30 hours that when I am using the 62" MMM in thick grass I use almost a gallon an hour. When using the box blade or even using the 4' rotary cutter I use maybe 1/2 gallon per hour.

Do you by chance mow with the PowerFlow Material collection system?

I have a '05 2305 (160hrs on it, also have a 3720 cab) and it sips gas (They both do),
seems like I can go 1/3 of the summer on a single fill. The one exception is when I ran (I don't use it anymore) the powerflow MCS.

The reason is that the powerflow is a blower so it's using a huge amount of HP all the time, whether or not you are sucking grass. (Actually, if you clog it it uses slightly less).
I easily doubled, if not tripled my fuel consumption when running with it. It was such a pain I run the mulching kit now.

I have a Craftsman 25hp (Kohler) GT5000 gasser (My girlfriend uses it at her place, I used to use it (pre 2005) at mine) and it uses much much more fuel than my 2305 for mowing the same area.

Using up to 1 gal. per hour while mowing thick grass sounds pretty correct to me. Mowing can end up using more fuel than anything. I would suspect your running at a slower RPM while doing the grading? Even if your not, you probably aren't meeting the resistance for the engine have to work as hard as it does when mowing the grass.

1*Makes no difference it still takes the same amount of fuel per hour.

Whether it uses the same amount of fuel per hour isn't the point. If you spread 1 tractors amount of work out over 3 than of course you won't be filling the tanks as much.

Out of curiosity, what RPM are you mowing at? Mine dorsn't "seem" too bad, but maybe I need to pay better attention, it seems comparable to my Kubota.

When I mow my grandpa's yard (which i will do today), the tractor never seemes to use much fuel no matter what RPMs I use. Most of its fuel is for grading the arenas every morning. But I usually fill it with fuel until I cant get more in there so there is actually more than a full tank which lasts quite a while. Good luck and here is a picture I drew yesterday of a 2305.

Really nice picture, my 14 year old grandson uses my JD2305 a lot too. I am teaching him to use a chainsaw now too.

JD is as Japanese as the Kubota. We have three JD's and even our old JD265 gas has a Japanese engine in it. The farm tractors are American made.

I don't have any data to confirm this but I do think the fuel economy of my 2305 improved slightly once it was broken in. I started tracking fuel usage at around 50 hours and I am averaging .68 gallons per hour to this point(125 hours on the tractor now). Sometimes I mow at the 540 rpm mark on the tach and other times I mow between 2,200-2,500 rpms.

I know Deere has a Japanese motor, but when did Kubota start assembling in America?
