Good morning all,

I though my clutch was worn out, there was too much play in the petal. the gears would not stop turning when the clutch was engaged, but the linkage/rod from the pedal to the throwout bearing lever was tightened all the way. although the clutch was not slipping. so I split the tractor last night. the clutch looks good it is about 0.39" thick. the flywheel looks like it has been machined recently (before I bought the tractor). It looks like the levers on the pressure plate are adjustable. they are sitting 1.4" from the surface, when everything is bolted together. this is a single stage clutch by the way.

so my question are; what is the thickness of the clutch before it is considered worn out?

How do you adjust and set the levers (to what specs).

Thanks,

D.

For my 2030 There is a special guage/tool for setting the pressure plate fingers when bolted to the flywheel. Called JD227. 2240 may use the same or similar tool. Might be worth having a dealer do this adjustment, or see if they will loan/rent you the tool.

Hi all, I found the specs for the the pressure plate fingers, I was told to set them at 1.8 inches. the thickness of the clutch seems to be correct (.38 inches). I slid the tractor back together and adjusted the clutch pedal rod so that I have 1" of travel before the throwout bearing touches the fingers. the rod is now adjusted in the middle.

I tested it out, it is definitely better. when going from neutral into gear the gears are still turning, nothing like before but would prefer them to be stopped when shifting. any other suggestions?

Thanks, D

Unless the serial number is above 350,000. How did the splines look on the clutch shaft? Worn splines can cause the disk to hang up. splines should have small amount of lube on them when assembled.
