2210 Front end noise?

Hi all,
I have been noticing a noise coming from the front end of my 2210 when in 4WD lately. When turning it makes a clacking noise that sounds a lot like diesel knock, but I'm sure its coming from the axle and not the engine. I dont remember hearing this noise before. Tractor has about 230 hours on it.

Anyone elses make this noise?

Have you checked/changed the oil in the front axle? Are you using the 4WD on a hard surface?

I don't think this will make that sort of noise but worth a shot. If you haven't checked your lug nuts in awhile, may be worth looking into.

Happens on all surfaces and I'm going to be changing ALL fluids this weekend as its been a little while.

I will have to see if it helps.

You should not use 4WD unless the surface will allow some slippage of the tires or it will put alot of strain on the drive train.

As usual, I know enough to be dangerous, but I am confused by Kennyd's advice to only use the 4WD when the tires can have some slippage. The only time I use 4WD is in plowing snow on asphalt and concrete with a rear blade. 2WD is inadequate for this task. I don't want to use chains since they mark the surface. In a typical winter, this amounts to about 8-10 total hours. Am I asking for trouble down the road by this use? I want to keep my 2210 as long as possible.Thanks for any feedback.

Since you are plowing snow...you will be fine due to the slippery nature of the snow-that's why you need the 4WD (called MFWD by JD) in the first place.

The front wheels actually turn faster when in 4WD-thus "pulling" the tractor to assist with traction. The problem is when say you are moving dirt with 4WD, then drive onto dry pavement or hardpacked material, the front and rear wheels are turning at different rates putting the system in a bind that can cause damage. The problem is further amplified when turning tightly because the inside wheels make fewer rotations than the outside wheel per distance traveled.

Bottem line is only use 4WD when it's needed. Clear as mud
