If you see foamy/milky oil the problem is like you said "air entrainment" and it gets sucked in from an N/G or loose suction line/tubing, or it could be a leaky shaft seal on the pump......clogged suction strainer/filter or oil too thick will compound this condition.....
Best to check all connections and glob grease on the shaft seal if it's out in the open.....
It's rare to have the cyls introduce air as it would need an overrunning load to create suction to have this happen.....
I'd double/triple check all suction connections/piping/hose before proceeding....:thumbsup:
