2040 Steering Weirdness

I just bought a 2040 w/FEL and the steering pulls badly...it turns the steering wheel when sitting still. Is this a hydrostatic steering system issue? Any suggestions on fixing?

More than likely, the steering pump will have to be removed and reconditioned. You are looking at 5 to 7 hours of shop labor (depending on the type of loader). The loader may have to be removed to gain access to the cowl area. The other possibility is a piston o ring leaking by in one of the steering cylinders. However, that is unlikely. Good luck with the repair. Incidently, most steering wheels will windmill on a hydrostat steering system. It will take several minutes for it to make a complete revolution if it is working right. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'm getting concerned now.

I registered through the Deere parts site and discovered that some of those parts for the steering are NLA!!! I thought you could ALWAYS get parts for a DEERE! Jeez!

The rest of the story...
I bought this tractor sight unseen...my Dad turned it up in the classifieds near where he lives. He went to look at it and gave a fair report ...the steering issue is a big deal but the price was right (at least I think so) $5600 for a 2040 with a FEL and box blade. It ran, didn't smoke, everything worked and I had the money. Dad negotiated him down to $5300 and I sent the $$$.

Heck, I won't even get to play with it until next week!

Anyway, I'm crossing my fingers that I can figure out how to solve the steering problem and restore this beast to life...I've done it with other stuff, why not a tractor?

Well, I stopped off at Bigon Equipment in Taylor, TX last Friday to ask about the availability of parts for my 2040. They were very helpful and reassured me that replacement parts were available and that the repair is realtively straighforward too.

I'll post more as this develops and I repair the problem.
