2015 F150 Tow Test vs. Dodge and Chevy

I went drag racing last Friday night at a local 1/8 mile dragstrip. I saw a lot of good old American V8's running and not many imports. I also didn't see any mullets.

LOL, What part of central Illinois is the track located. I grew up and went to high school near Decatur, Argenta to be exact. I didn't like corn or soybeans so I got out while I could. I could post a current pictures of some schoolmates that still sport mullets but that may be just because that is the only place hair still grows.

The track is located near Havana Illinois, which is about 60 miles northwest of Springfield Illinois. How did I do? It was a test and tune so there wasn't any competition other than the car next of you. My car, a 2010 Dodge Challenger ran a best of 9.02 at 80 mph. Its done better in the past but the heat and the humidity must have hurt my times a little. This is an 1/8 mile track. On nights they compete, its bracket racing.

The new Hellcat would be about down the 1/4 before you finish the 1/8! :)

Sounds like a blast!

Not quite but there was a late model Malibu running last Friday at Havana the was running about an 11.50 in the 1/8 mile, the Hellcat would beat it even if it ran the 1/4 mile.

The bottom line is America cant build cars worth a ****-sorry if I hit some nerves but its based on my experience as a consumer. I've owned them all, will never go back to GMC garbage, be a cold day in **** before I buy another Ford and as for Jeep(Dodge, Chrysler) I think this is going to be my last as they just cant seem to get axles right.

My brothers BMW X1 can out tow almost any 4 cyl and V6 and it does it well, it just has a twin turbo 4 cylinder engine and get sgreat gas mileage-Ive seen it with my own eyes. Plus its build well, and isdesigned with better brakes, also, unlike American designed vehicles it turns\corners very well.

I may stray into a Tundra Max Cab next, hopefully even though its made in America, it will impress me. Mercedez has a new pickup lineup and if I can afford it that too may be an option. Yes Im partial to German made vehcles and Japanese Vehicles.

I have had and do have a few good ones. But your right the US mfg are way behind from across the pond, they have been building HP from small displacement engines for years with excellent durability. Heck even the Aussies are ahead of the US, look at the new Camaro, where did the tech come from. CJ

I have zero concerns about aluminum. Ford is not the first auto manufacturer to use it extensively, so we would have heard about horror stories long ago if there were big problems. Aluminum bodies use different technologies for assembly to avoid many of the issues cited in posts above. Sounds like the real challenge will be educating potential customers and skeptics.

+1 Agreed

My 2004 Lincoln LS, the entire front end is mostly aluminum so they could get a 50/50 weight ratio for ideal handling (performance has traditionally been the reason to use aluminum and typically is only used on the more expensive vehicles, it will be interesting to see if they keep a steel option in the fleet division). 150,000 miles and the nose looks as good as a new one. Silver paint over aluminum doesn't show the couple rock chips it has at all, I have to hand wash the car to find them... No dings either, the aluminum on my car seems to resist the small dents and dings better than the sheet metal steel parts. I think the aluminum (at least on this model of car) is a harder, more rigid grade of metal than the steel sheet metal than I have seen on any vehicle. I agree the major issues will be changing people's minds and ideas about aluminum.

Wow, sounds like you have had very bad luck with vehicles. I have never owned a dud or lemon (knock on wood) and I have owned every make foreign and domestic new and used. One of the reasons I spend so much time researching prior to purchasing is to give me some insurance of buying something reliable. All the research in the world won't protect me from the infamous Friday afternoon build but so far I'm batting 1000. BMW makes some fine vehicles and some that are nothing but trouble. I wouldn't consider any of them to compete with what is discussed in this thread. My brother's X5 spends a lot of time at the dealer service department but he doesn't mind because they allow him to borrow anything off the lot.

You should get good service out of a new Toyota Tundra based on the history of the current model. It is a fine truck if you don't mind its thirst.

How many of them drive a 3rd gen Camaro?
