Say what you want but you are in a 1 percent minority.

I mean come on. We all grew up dealing with carburetors and points but today you could not give most people something with them including me.

Of course just like they make disc brake kits for this old iron they also make efi systems and electronic ignitions.

Chris
My cars have HEI's...The points distributers can be dropped back in in 5 minutes....Good grief.

I never said I preferred drums, I said I was agnostic to them...Look up the word. Some people here get a little full of themselves. Good grief.

Lets see, my 1999 Silverado X-cab had 4 wheel disc brakes
Then my 1989 1ton P-32 Motorhome had 4 Wheel Disc Brakes.
So it seems that some people are confused about GM options and dates available but with all the other GM bashing going on here it's not surprising.
There are enough flaws in all the other brands too but then we are not supposed to be brand bashing here which some have forgotten.

I don't have an ax to grind with GM or anything im just a lifelong customer that they lost due to the bailout and their lack of innovation and trying to make a better truck. My 2011 was a huge disappointment in terms of quality, but the engine was jam up and one d the best on the market hands down. What'd they go and do? Put afm on it. No thanks, you just lost me. I don't mind afm just give me the option to buy a truck without it. They didn't. Someone else will. It has k own problems and I'm not trying to inherit those. I love my tacoma now. Ill buy a regular cab 3/4 ton or 1 ton srw sometime down the rode but for now I'm doing just fine. Oh yeah my 04 z71 was a much better truck then my 2011! My dads 2000 is a better truck then my 04.

GM only offered disc brakes in 2004 standard on all models. To get disc brakes you have to get the nht package. If you have disc brakes on a GM pickup that isn't an 04 or has the nht package then someone did the upgrade for you.

With all due respect, every GM 4x4 I've owned that have ranged from 1970 to 2011 have been far superior to each of it's previous models that I've owned...And I had no complaints with any of them over the years. They just kept getting better. The 2011 is superior to anything I've ever had...What was the problem with your 2011?

As I said my brother has had 2 AFM 5.3's and he has no issue whatsoever with them...I've never had one of those, so I can't say personally. It would be nice if that could be shut off if one chooses to do so.....Thank your local EPA for all of this..Don't blame GM.

My 03 2500hd has disks all around.

Anyway, I did this when I read they still have the 4.3. 6/8 = .75 and .75 * 5.7 = 4.3

**** that is like 60 years of the same engine design. Also 4.3 = 265 and 5.3 = 327

I had to refresh my memory of the 4.3, the last memories of the 4.3 were my mom's Astrovan when I was 15 y/o flooring it and getting scared and letting off the gas and it bouncing up and down. Union efficencies, just chop 2 cylinders off the 350 and sell it for less. Steel is like 60 cents a lb, huge savings there of like $20.

I might give you the 4.3 as I haven't cared to research it....When was the last 327 produced before the 5.3 was developed?...Where is the duplication of the 6.2?....Just becuse the displacment is the same doesn't mean the motors are the same...The V8's have no relationship with their historical displacements. Just look at them.

I owned one 4.3 in an S-10 pickup (that I sold at 230K miles) that would blow off some serious hole shots until the day I sold it....Ran perfect for me and the buyer...He customized it, drove it for a few years and sold it...The 4.3 is a good motor in my experience.

I'm not reading anything on how the 4.3 is different structurally besides being aluminum.

I'm referring on the displacement numbers in that they don't change them much.

You're right, they don't...I really don't worry about that myself...It's what they do is what matters...If they had a 403hp 5.7 instead of a 6.2 I'd be fine with that too.

The 4.3l V6 is 262 cu.in. and the 5.3l is 325 cu.in.

I looked at GM, Ford, Nissan, Toyota, and Dodge 4x4 extended cab trucks in 2008 when I bought my Titan. Drove each one and talked numbers and options with what was on the lot. GM was the only one that meet my criteria that had drum brakes on the rear. These were 08 & 09 models.

I am not surprised. I will laugh my arse off the day they release a bed step after making so much fun of Ford with it. Oh wait, they now have one. Give me a break. GM is so far behind they think they are leading. Lol...:)

Long story short they are playing catchup as always. Ford, Toyota, Dodge, and even Nissan with its 10 year old design are ahead of them.

Chris

Chevy had a bumper step on the Avalanche when it debuted in 2001 so they actually did the step thing before Ford. I think the location will make all the difference -- a few of my friends have the Ford step and the handrail folds down onto the tailgate protector. It just gets in the way when loading or unloading (you can't slide things across it and it fills up with stones, dirt, etc.)

My '99 SLT GMC had 4 wheel disks, that always felt soft. In 2005 they came out with a Bosch system that had larger front rotors with drum rears that according to the press release at the time had a better feel to them. That is why the 2005 and higher have 17" tires. My '05 Work truck went 60K on on Disk/Drum and my '99 went around the same on 4 wheel disks. In my experience the 2005 stops better, brake feel is better etc., and I get what I consider to be a reasonable amount of mileage from the brakes.

I guess I get a little confused that Ford is heralded for bringing back a 5.0 Liter Mustang engine even though it has literally nothing but the displacement in common with the old 302, yet GM gets crucified for bringing out 3 completely new motors that just so happen so share displacement size with previous motors. The engines are not the same period. They did not just slap direct injection onto the old engines and call it good.

Before being accused of being a fanboy I'll admit that I've owned more GM vehicles than any other and I've had terrific luck with them as a whole, especially their newer pickup trucks. However I also recently owned a 2010 Ford F250 diesel that I liked and I currently own a 1997 Ford F350 Powerstroke plow truck. I am also now seriously looking at the new 1 ton SRW Dodge trucks with the Cummins/Aisin combo. If the truck will do the job I need it to do efficiently and cost effectively I'll consider buying it, simple as that. I actually like these new GM trucks and think that as long as the new 6.2 makes its way to the HD trucks as well that they'll have a real winner. I'd love to have just a bit more punch than the 6.0 in my Chevy has and I think that even the old 6.2 would have delivered that if it was offered in the HD trucks.

I know that GM has been very conservative with their styling but I still prefer it to the 2011 and up Ford Super Duties. I have said from the beginning of the current body style that Ram has the best looking trucks. I'll also say that as much as I liked my 2010 F250, and even though I concede that it's diesel had more pulling power, I like my 2011 Silverado HD better in just about every way. It rides better in every way that I've driven them. It squats less than the Ford did when pulling my tractor or any heavy load. I prefer the steering feel of the Chevy. I honestly and truly believe that characterizing the new GM trucks as anything less than completely capable and competitive with any other truck on the market is inaccurate. I think that the whole truck market right now is the best it's ever been. And though I likely wouldn't buy a new Ford diesel, or a non Aisin equipped Ram I can honestly say that I would purchase some kind of truck from any of the big 3 right now. They all make something that I would be happy to own and that's the first time I think I can say that.

.... Reuss said GM is still looking at using a diesel in one of its light-duty pickups. It should be noted that the article doesn't clearly say if Reuss was speaking about the smaller Colorado/Canyon, which does offer small turbo-diesels in other global markets, or the coming Silverado/Sierra, which has not had a diesel since the late '80s and early '90s. Reuss did not offer further details about when and where such a diesel option would be decided....

Not exactly saying much there. It's as non-specific as can be.

That would be nice except they dont make the Colorado anymore!!! Maybe they will re-introduce it?

I have a 2012, i love it over the 07 dakota i have but if it was not a work (purchased for me) truck i would of went with a silverado, not much diff in $$ or mileage.

The Colorado is to be re-introduced soon.

Let me make it simple for everyone- if you don't like it, don't buy it. Last time I checked, we still have freedom of choice in this country. My 2011 Silverado impresses me- it starts, drives, tows and hauls- basically what a truck is supposed to do. All the other stuff being argued about in this thread is completely useless to me- they can add all the turbos and direct injection they want. As long as it still works when I need it too, great. Enjoy your steps, seat warmers, fart freshners and any other useless items you feel make a difference. They serve no purpose when it comes down to me buying a new truck. I honestly miss the days when a truck had a bench seat, vinyl floors, a radio, a/c and a stick shift. Good luck finding that- guess we have all gotten a little too "soft" these days.
