Over the years, it seemed like it was getting harder and harder to get a clean (no soot or engine clanging sounds) when starting my tractor when engine was cold. I was running 2 glow plug time sessions which helped, but lately that wasnt enough.
I finally got off my lasy butt and traced down what has been happening. When i unplugged the glow plug harness, i was getting 12 volts when i turned the key on, so relay and computer board were working correctly.
I got my service manual out to see what was involved in pulling glow plugs, and it wasnt much help. I talked to parts guy at Jordan Tractor and he kind of walked me thru it….that and asking some questions on this site.
Hardest part was removing the hood…..that sucked. I have 4 cuts on my hands alone from that. Kioti like alot of steel as they didnt skimp on the weight.
The 4 nuts securing the common rail are near microscopic and were hard for my big OLD hands to finagle, but i finally succeeded in getting them off with lock nuts without losing any. Had magnet handy just incase.
I was leery of breaking the plug off as so many people warned me about major damage if this happens, but they came loose very easily. Guess i lucked out. I had a diesel mechanic from this site (thank you DieselBound) recommend a hot engine and soak them in penetrating oil (Deep Creep)for 20 minutes. I did that.
I measured the ohms on the new ones and compaired them to the old ones. Only 1 of the old ones matched the resistance. One other had 4 times the resistance. The other 2 were open so useless. Basically i was down to 1 operating glow plug.
No wonder why it was smoking so bad.
Installed the new ones with some ceramic paste (anti sieze) and torqued them down. Reinstalling the rail sucked due to micro sized nuts, but i got it finished in pretty short time….with much cussing.
Fired up the cold engine after glow cycle…..no smoke and no noisy engine sounds. Just like when she was new.
Getting three of the glow plugs out was pretty straight forward, but of course the stupid engineers placed one out of site and under a major bracket supporting the ac compressor and fuel injector system. I had to go thru nearly my entire supply of 12mm socket and extension and wrench combinations to get that plug out. And i had about a paper width clearance left to remove socket after pulling it out. I have 4 more bruises on hands from that.
But, hopefully ill never have to mess with this item again…i hope. The others lasted nearly 15 years.
