Hope you have the manual transmission...

The Cummins is a great motor, but Dodge has never produced an automatic transmission that could handle it.

I love my Dodge CTD 2500. Sounds like you also have the 5.9 Cummins, which does good on MPG. The auto will be fine if you don't overheat it or attempt to gain a 100 hp with a tuner. The manual will also encounter problems if you add more hp and tq than the factory specs.

The 6.7 came out in 2007.5 and several 5.9s were made prior to this in early 2007.

Maybe the older 46 & 47 re auto trannys. The newer 48re trannys are doing well.I also get a kick out of folks who do major power upgrades to the motor and complain there trannys take a dump.H,mm go figure. If you want to upgrade your auto tranny look into suncoast.DTT,goerend brothers or HTS.coobie

It is auto..manual transfer case for 4 wd. I researched on the diesel forums & found /read the auto's are good as long as you don't add power upgrades. I read there are problems with stick if tou up the power too much... It is an 07 with 5.9. 6.7 came in 07.5 models.. I was looking at new 6.7 until I read about all the emission problems.

You did good by getting a 5.9 If the truck holds together I would keep it for a long time.

I had a 1996 Dodge Cummins. The automatic transmission is the 747 transmission. The old "Torque Flight" they used in dragsters back in the 60's. The 747 tranny and Cummins motor will tear up what it is hooked to long before the motor and transmission will fail.

The Cummins is a great motor, but Dodge has never produced an automatic transmission that could handle it.

Most failures of Dodge automatics come from inappropriate user input, or power adders. If you drive it sensibly, (I.E., not flooring it from every stopping point where ever you go) and don't add hp too it, (anyone of the big 3's auto transmissions will start experiencing problems when you add power), than you won't have a problem. The 48re that was behind the 03 - 07 5.9's is a solid piece, and the best auto transmission available that was mated to the 5.9

Wonder how you got that nickname?

To the OP: Congrats on the truck, with the proper care and maintenance that truck will last you a long time.

Just to be fair, most any transmission will incur a higher chance of failure once power is added. It's the first thing to absorb the torque shock load behind the engine itself.

No truck manufacturer is going to spend more money, even if it's $5 to add more clutch material or a bigger TC to make sure the customer can go add 200HP and still have the tranny hold together as reliably as one behind a stock motor. No, the board of directors won't like the way that affects "the bottom line".

I've seen all brands cracked open on my buddies transmission shop rebuild tables from too much torque.

You can blast apart any size trans from adding too much power.
