A puff of smoke at start up is normal, even at brand new.
At very low idle, these 3 cylinders shake like crazy. For most starts, especially cold, I throttle up enough that the vibration drops off. When I shut it off, I throttle down just above where it starts and turn off the key. Hopefully I hit the magic throttle position for an rpm where the next start is high enough to not shake so badly. There's no tach on these, so I can't tell you what that rpm is.
