Hoping the TBN brain trust can help with a question.

I am looking at an '05 Chevy 2500HD with the Duramax. I am pretty sure that the Duramax could only be had with the Alison Automatic (5 speed I think) or a stick. The truck is listed a 4 speed auto and the indicator on the dash shows D,3,2,1. I am waiting for a reply from the seller, but thought I would check to see if anyone knows.

Also does anybody have thoughts, experiences or opinions on '05 Chevys with the Duramax?

Thanks!

Matt

OD is automatic. There is an OD disable that prevents the tranny from going from 4-5. It is the same button as tow/haul mode. Short push is tow/haul, long push is OD disable. My 03 is the 5 speed, my 08 is the 6 speed. The 03 gets better fuel milage.

Does the dash indicator in the '03 look like the one i posted above?

The 5 speed '03 actually gets better mileage than the 6 speed '08? Wow!

My O5 duramax dash is the same and is a 5 speed allison.I was told when I ordered it that the standard wasn't available for the dmax anymore. I put a banks chip, intake and exhaust on it and get 24 hiway when empty. Got 11 coming up the Alcan with a 25k lb load. Has been a good truck!

On mine the o/d off/on is there with the the tow/haul mode

It probably has to do with the new emissions requirements. I believe the 6spd is geared a little lower too.

Agree it should be a 5 spd.
I had an 05 Dmax/ Allison and miss it. With the larger exhaust system and programmer I was getting 20-21 MPG empty and 14-15 towing 7K. On the newer ones they added a DPF which cuts into mileage. Now they are using urea systems but don't know how MPG are.
The 08 1/2T gas I have now is lucky to get 16.5 empty. Should have kept the 05.

Thanks for all the help guys. As usual TBN answers my question!!

Still interested in opinions on these trucks. I think the injector problems from the earlier D-Max were fixed by '05 weren't they?

You guys are getting way better mileage than me. 04 dmax with Allison. Banks tuner and zaust. I'm just at 14 mpg. But I run the piss out of it. 120000 and not a blip

I've towed anything I wanted with it no problem. And I love the interior. Dash is closer to a corvette than a cavalier. Leather guts are a plus in my book.

I will start out by saying I am not a Dmax fan at all. Not so much the motor or tranny but the GM truck part of it. If you are insisted on getting one get a 06-07.5. I had a 05 and it was the 3rd biggest POS I have owned. Nothing but troubles. There were tons of improvements made in 06. Who knows, I may still be a GM man if I would have bought a year later. Mine was so bad I traded it after 9 months of ownership.

That said the 05 is a 5 speed. The 6 speed came along in the 06.

I had injector issues in my 05 along with tons of other little problems that keep in the shop. Biggest issue was overheating pulling 15,000#. They upgraded the intake and cooling system in the 06 that fixed this know problem. Traded it on a 06 F-350 with the 6.0L Powertroke and never looked back. Been 100% trouble free other than a fuel gauge that quit after about 3 months. The replace the entire dash cluster in 15 minutes and fixed.

My 03 gets 20-22 on the highway, 16 in town. The 08 gets 18-20 on the highway, 15 in town. Both are 4wd with 3.73 rear end. Display looks like the picture on both. You cannot put it in OD, D is 4th gear on both. I have leather on the 03, wife has cloth on the 08. The wife liked leather but is happy with the cloth on the 08. It is much improved over the cloth that was available in 03.

It is a 5 speed like the others said and you can lock out OD on the end of the shifter.

We have a 2005 GMC 3500 4x4 cc lb with the Duramax/Alison and love it. It averages between 16 and 17 mpg every day farm use and gets right at 20 mpg on the highway (it is all stock). It handel 2 yards of gravel in the bed fine and does great towing out 10k, 33 foot travel trailer. Ours has cloth seats and the fold down consol in the center. We have had it about 4 years and are very happy with it.
