2004 Mahindra 4110
I have a 2004 4110 with 851 hrs. I was using it today and the engine started making noise. Sounds like a piston skirt to me! Has anyone had engine problems like this? Please help!

mine makes a funny noise at certain RPMs. Does it happen at all engine speeds?

Mine is at all engine speeds and gets worse with rpms.

I had one in the past that the adapter plate bolts backed out and that made a noise like what you described.
The adapter plate is between the fly wheel and the engine block.

Check the pulley on the hydraulic pump. If it like my 6520's, the thing just came apart with the bolts still on the pump hub. I have always had a full rpm noise I never have found. But that pulley coming apart was a heart stopper!

You should buy one of the inexpensive stethescopes at Harbor Freight or similar to try and locate the noise - could be many different things including what wallace says - mine broke those bolts years ago. You can always just take a long 3/8" drive extension or a long screwdriver and use it as a stethescope - place it carefully around different points on the engine and let the other end rest lightly on your jawbone just in front of your ear, you can hear quite a bit this way. I would think it extremely unlikely for a piston or rod problem with this engine but you never know. When my engine bolts broke I had a terrible noise when I'd get a good load in the front bucket - it was the ringear on the flywheel grinding the nosecone of the starter where the engine was flexing away from the trans/adapter plate. I finally caught the problem before it did permanent damage to anything but was a real pain to repair - a full front split of the tractor. Seems they didn't have the extra braces for the FEL on the 4110's back then and Mahindra supplied me with them when I contacted them about this problem I had back in 2004. Good luck with yours !!

Spoken like a true mechanic. Long skinny screwdrivers with big handles make awesome stethoscopes. They are just hard to wear around your neck.;)

Well still don't have the front gear case off to see what the noise is! Need a 46mm or 1-13/16 deep wall impact socket. Nobody around had one in stock, so I had to order one. Should be here today or tomorrow. Hurry up and wait!

I finally got it apart and found that the cam gear had broke a couple of teeth. It had not broke the teeth all the way across, but just off the corners. Man that made a lot of noise for it to just be a couple of teeth. I will have to say that when I got the front end loader and the hood and sheet metal off the noise did sound different and you could tell that it was coming from the front gear case. Now just order parts and reassemble! Fun...Fun!
