Yep. Get yourself a pocket scanner. Handiest thing ever. Sometimes, (well most of the times) I have had codes come one, it is just something stupid that I dont ever fix and just ignore. Like emissions garbage, EVAP something or another, etc. So having a light on all of the time, I check for new codes every time I change the oil, otherwise I havent a clue if there are ever any new codes.

The light comes on whenever a parameter is out of the designed range. The code is only stored if this happens for a certain amount of driving cycles (usually 3-5)

Likewise, if the out of range parameter doesn't duplicate itself after a certain amount of cycles it will clear itself.

I would suggest getting a scanner for sure. They are cheap and easy to find. I would also disconnect the battery for 10 minutes to reset the system to see if the code comes back.

IF it's a V6, there are a couple rubber elbows in the pcv hose that are notorious for breaking down and causing a vacuum leak which will make it idle rough unless it's a very minor leak. It's an easy fix if that's the prob.
Also there are isolator bolts inside the intake that have rubber washers on them, they have been known to cause vacuum leaks too. If/when you pull the pvc hose off at the pcv valve (on the side of the intake), look inside and see if there is any coolant in the hose, coolant circulates through those pcv valves (strange I know) and they have been known to leak coolant inside the intake, causing misfires.

been driving a '00 4 runner with the check engine light on for many years now. runs better with it on than if its reset to off and has to come back on after a few days by itself. its always an emissions issue.

What you're supposed to do, or at least what I've seen done, is to stick a little piece of black tape over that light so it's not a distraction.:laughing:

What are these bulbs made from anyway:confused: any other bulb that burn constantly for a period of time would eventually burn out... Right!:cool:

You can get an app like torque and a blue tooth scanner for OBD2.

Can yiu link the actual physical scanner/hook up for the phone app. I have seen app, but never the matching scanner. I currently have 4 vehicles, all with CEL on. Mostly bs like emissions or antilock brakes, but would be nice to scan on occasion to make sure no mew codes. Also what years is OBD2, I've goot 02 dodge, 03 toyo, 05 chevy, amd 08 chevy.
